"What was planned for release on the ill-fated COULD YOU WALK ON WATER LP in February 1966? After myriad hassles with the album title, the Stones' British label had refused to issue the album the band had submitted for an early March release. Much conflict, many rounds of negotiations and much brouhaha ensued. By the time a settlement was reached, the contents of the LP was different; the Stones had been in the studio in the interim and substituted a couple of the tracks. Finally, the title was changed." - Karnach & Beanson.

"The new Sister Morphine 2CD release "Could You Walk On Water" is essential in documenting tons of early Stones tracks all remastered with care and the magic touch of Cool Cool Hand. It's apparent from the first spin that lots of time and effort went into the dissection of the material. This stuff is now soo alive and the new twist on the proceedings leaves us with a solid array of the Stones, their power, poetry and diversity which truly came to the forefront in the turbulent 60's. CD1 includes original titles which were rejected by Decca in 1966 plus a slew of remastered Aftermath material which was available on the UK release. Who's Driving Your Plane has always been a big fave and this is the strongest mix I've ever heard either on vinyl or CD. Cd2 picks up with Big Hits including sonic gems like Honky Tonk Women. The beefed up enhancement makes the version from the Singles Collection sound pale in comparison. 19th Nervous Breakdown...oh yeah! And in stereo no less! The same can be said for The Last Time another definite keeper and again included in stereo.

Ultimate Spinach 1st Album - 1967

Already some 40 years old, this delightful peace of hippy tosh still elicits fond memories with those who heard it first time round! Made under adverse conditions,(the guitarists were playing up apparently!)this album is a curious mix of styles featuring farfisa organ,feedback-drenched guitars, recorders and vocal harmonies, the best numbers featuring a female vocalist on tracks like the memorable "Ballad of the hip death goddess" (which says it all,really!) "Baroque no.1" is a straight rip-off of Country Joe & the Fish's "Section 43".

When I first heard this album in 1968 it totally blew my young mind. It was just so deep, man. The Hip Death Goddess and Your Head Is Reeling were total green velvet mushrooms in the amethyst igloo of my mind. Or something like that. There will never be another time in music like the late 60's and although this ain't exactly the Beatles or Dylan it is a mighty fine example of the unique multidimensional sponge muffin of its time.

Sound quality is pretty good considering this is no 24-Bit remaster! Also the sleeve leaves a lot to be desired, as there is no information or liner notes. Ultimate Spinach were and shall remain an odd comic/cosmic footnote in the history of psychedelia, all the more odd that they galvanised themselves to make a sort of classic 2nd album in the guise of "Behold and See" before disappearing into the ether after a mediocre 3rd album.

So kick off those sandals, light up a josstick (or something)and try not to crack up too much! Also why do I always get a vision of the hippy teacher in the Beavis & Butthead series whenever I hear the lead male vocalist!

Brute Force - Extemporaneous (1970)

Stephen Friedland played keyboards and guitar for the Tokens. During that time he composed songs for Del Shannon, the Creation, the Cyrkle and the Chiffons . He left the Tokens in 1967 and recorded the heavily arranged and deeply absurd I, Brute Force: Confessions of Love for Columbia Records. Described by Brute as "a paradigm of being far ahead of its time", the record swiftly sank below both the critic's and the public's radar. 1969 saw the release of Brute's most memorable single, "The King of Fuh" -- the joke being that the protagonist was referred to as "the Fuh King." The track was championed by George Harrison and released as a single on the Beatles' Apple label. The next year Extemporaneous was released. Recorded live in the studio in 1969 with minimal piano accompaniment before a small audience, it was made up largely of comedy songs, political jabs and absurd improvisations, and has since become a sought after slab of vinyl. This is the reissue with numerous bonus tracks by Rev-Ola in 2004.

Bob Dylan - Unreleased - 1966-1996

I have been collecting unreleased Dylan for ages and here is a smattering of some of what I have come across through the years. While hardly definitive these sessions are nonetheless a good cross section of what is available out there. Some of these songs are deservedly unreleased, some have no known Dylan version, some were abandoned unfinished and therefore not of releasable quality, but others are real gems and deserve official release, either in a future edition of The Bootleg Series, or as "bonus" tracks on remastered albums.

Syd Barrett - Have You Got It Yet Vol. I & II - Version 2.0

This is one of the most beloved boots among early Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett fans. The members of the Madcap Laughs Yahoo Group (forum dedicated to the late Syd Barrett) compiled few years ago an Improved 2.0 Version after locating by themselves the best sources for each track. I found this copy in the defunct blog Hear Rock City. All tracks are in FLAC format and each volume has an alternate artwork so you may choose your favorite.

A must for Pink Floyd And Syd Barrett fans !

Notes:

Although there is a lack of shows from this tour available in high quality audio, the ones that are out there, like the "Fab Five" Radio Broadcasts
(Roxy, Agora, Passaic, Atlanta & Winterland) are SO good that to choose between them is like splitting hairs. Everyone has their own favorites from this era of Bruce, and can present an argument as to why their favorite is "the best." One thing that is certain, in my mind anyway, there has not been more fierce performances from Bruce and the band before or after the Darkness Tour-the shows are a perfect example of rock and roll personified. The living, breathing essence of pure rock fury and blistering soul. The tempos were faster, the guitars rocked harder, the performances so exhilarating that it seemed like Bruce may have very well been living out his final moments right there on stage, and was hell bound on making it the greatest moment of his life (and yours). If there is one tour (and album) that I can say without hesitation is MY favorite, and which locked me into a fascination with Bruce Springsteen's music, it is Darkness On The Edge Of Town and the tour that accompanied the record in 1978. This compilation includes EVERY song from the Darkness album,most definitively his best.

So, here it is-highlights from the Darkness Tour. I'm sure most folks already have the full shows that these clips have been taken from, or maybe you've already put together your own 1978 compilation. I hope all who listen to this collection get as much joy out of it as I do.

I've always loved the way Bruce chose classic covers to pepper the show, and several of those nuggets are included here. I'm also a huge fan of the lead-in building up to She's The One, whether it be Mona, Not Fade Away, or Gloria. Here are 2 versions mixed together to create a "She's The One Medley" which is actually made up of Mona/Preacher's Daughter from the Winterland Show (12/15/78 and Gloria/She's The One from the Atlanta show (9/30/78. Prove It All Night may SOUND better on some of the other tapes from the tour, but I challenge anyone to find a more hell-raising, spine-tingling guitar solo by Bruce than the one included here from Atlanta. Then there is the guitar blow-out of Because The Night from the Agora, which can invoke seizures to those predisposed to such things! The dialogue in Growin' Up from the Agora is also classic vintage Bruce, and hilarious to boot. Badlands and Darkness from Passaic are downright vicious in their intensity, as is Streets Of Fire from Portland's Paramount Theatre. I'm also especially partial to the Saginaw, Michigan show from Sept. 3, which I think could get my "show of the tour" nod, but that audience recording is plagued with some overly enthusiastic audience members. Also included is Bruce's introduction to Factory from that show, a personal highlight when Bruce addresses his father and "those loud f**king machines!" The Roxy show
was also more than impressive, but due to the large amount of material officially released from that show, not much of it is included here. The tour also
boasted some fine early versions of songs which would later end up on The River (as well as Tracks), represented here by Point Blank, The Ties That Bind, and a terrific Rendezvous. And let us also not forget Santa, Rosie, the "birthday party" at the Passaic (Bruce's 29th), or the classic segue of Racing In The
Street into Thunder Road for that matter!

As I have said, arguments can be made as to which show or which particular version of a song was the best on this tour, but I'm sure a lot of folks would
agree this was Bruce and the band and one of the highest, if not THE highest, peaks of their career.

So now, crack open some cold ones, and bootleggers out there in radioland, ROLL YOUR TAPES!!!

As The Who weren't afraid of being funny, this silver disc does 'em good. There are even more bits of a 1973 Keith Moon BBC Radio 1 special that first appeared on the Maximum R&B box set. The funniest part is the Daltrey-Townshend dialogue before a take of Behind Blue Eyes in the studio. The Name Game, with Pete and Keith, is also funny. There's an alternate version of The Real Me that has a cool rhythm to it. This one sees lots of time in my stereo as I love the track list.

The centerpieces of this set:

- "Jaguar" and "Virginia" in superior quality.

- The "Life With The Moons" BBC spots. The box set has some of these, but they were treated to tons of NoNoise, and are often truncated. This disc has them (sourced from reference vinyl, so there is some rumble and some pops) in the full-length glory, in stereo with nice, uncompressed sound.

A lot of this material eventually appeared on the Jon Astley remasters of The Who's catalogue (notably the adverts that were worked into the re-tooled _The Who Sell Out_).

This is a must-have for any Who afficionado.
