Hot and Nasty - Black Oak Arkansas

I remember seeing these boys in the 70's, many times, on network shows like DON KIRSCHNER'S ROCK CONCERT, and ABC's IN CONCERT. They were on TV almost every weekend. Jim Dandy was a maniac with that sweaty blond hair flyin' all over the place. And who can forget Ruby Red, with her flaming red afro and her cheeks falling out of those short short cut-off jeans? They made quite an impression. A bunch of my favorites are on this. JIM DANDY, HOT AND NASTY, UNCLE ELIJAH, and my all time favorite BOA tune, MUTANTS OF THE MONSTER. To bad it's missing HEY YA'LL.

Remember, before there were THE CRAMPS, there was BLACK OAK ARKANSAS.

ALONG WITH NEIL YOUNG, BLACK OAK ARKANSAS WERE THE ORIGINATORS OF HILLBILLY GRUNGE. Like Neil, a lot of their music contained conscious hippy themes, like the environment and stuff. When I hear this music it makes me feel kind of sorry I'm not southern white trailer trash. (And I mean that as a compliment.) But at least I can sing a long with Jim Dandy and Black Oak.

A Saucerful of Videos - Pink Floyd

UFO - Chicago Amphitheater - March 1980.

Don't be fooled when you hear Foreigner's Head Games in the first track, it is just the warming sound on the monitors before the show begins.
And what an enormous show this is, despite some drop-outs and small cuts, and also some DJ talk but not too intrusive.
It's another one of those fabulous UFO performances at the International Amphitheater in Chicago this time on the No Place To Run tour on 1980 March 16th, with the song Too Hot To Handle being dedicated to Bon Scott that passed away one month before this gig.

After having released a number of dubious titles, Empress Valley has finally found its way back to further its “ Soundboard Revolutions.” Out of the blue, they somehow found a soundboard recording from what many fans consider is one the greatest shows that the band performed in ’75. Since I listened to the audience recording with the old Off Beat Record’s title “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre,” I have been a fan of this show because, despite the mediocre quality of tape and its incompleteness, I was able to feel the power and vibe which the band emitted or created in the first half of the show. Later, I also got Image Quality’s “St. Tangerine’s Day” featuring a more complete version of the audience tape and, with that title, I was able to confirm that the band had actually presented a nice performance throughout the show, including a gutsy version of “Stairway To Heaven” and “Heartbreaker” with very irregular arrangements. However, this new title from EV has blown all those past titles away! Despite some promotional advertisement referring to the term “stereo,” the newly surfaced soundboard as featured in the title is in mono rather than stereo, apart from a part of "Dazed And Confused" is actually stereo, as Jimmy's violin bow solo pans from one channels to the other. It is also a small regret that the soundboard did not capture the famous opening announcement saying “The American Return of Led Zeppelin!” as well as Robert's interesting reference to "Tangerine" after "Dazed And Confused" is finished. However, the soundboard presents the great show in almost full length. The recording is also very well balanced among the instruments and Robert’s voice and is therefore very enjoyable. Especially, Jonsey’s bass sounds are conspicuous in the recording, providing richness in the overall sounds. Accordingly, I am certain that the title lives up to the fame which EV once got with its “Soundboard Revolutions.” I truly hope that EV will continue its efforts to release more amazing titles such as this. The title comes in a paper case with two different types of artwork: the rare “Murder Incorporated” version limited to 200 copies (using the photos of a mass murder case which occurred in Chicago on some Valentine’s Day) and the standard edition featuring the band's stage shots. I got a copy of the "Murder Incorporated" version for myself on account of its rarity. However, the regular version may be more appealing to some others. In any case, the important thing is the tape presented in the title rather than the artwork. The title is definitely a “must” for any serious fan. (TH Nov 08)

This The Monks debut album was the first of only two discs produced by the band, and features almost all of their best bits. The songs are composed by Richard Hudson, John Ford and Terry Cassidy formerly of British prog band The Strawbs!

Most tracks focus on simple, three-chord guitar tunes with a stylistic nod to late 70s power-pop-punk bands like The Ramones, Big Star, and the Jam. Of course the minute the vocals kick in, you know these guys aren’t taking any musical legacy seriously… the nasal, way-to-British snarling and childlike lyrics are instantly smile-inducing and totally “take the p@#$” out of all the aformented bands. These guys didn’t make an album to change the world, they were just having fun, and it completely comes through your headphones.

Drop your stylus like an atom bomb on this record ! “Johnny B. Rotten” is rockabilly/surf craziness meets The Damned, but with an emphasis on FUN FUN FUN !!! This song will carve out a small corner in the back of your skull and wait there until a month later, when crawls out into your mind and you’ll catch yourself humming the tune. Same with the totally infectious next track “Drugs In My Pocket”.

The swinging “Love In Stereo” is just bizarre. The melodies, lyrics and vocals bring such diverse comparisons to mind as Weird Al Yankovitch meets Duran Duran meets the more laid-back songs of The Offspring. Check out “Spotty Face” before you move on to Side B, the rest is mainly just filler.

Flip your record over, and “Nice Legs…” sets the party tone with Dylan-esque mumblings and shout-along choruses. “I Ain’t Gettin Any” keeps the tempo up with a fast, bent rhythm that’s reminiscent of The Clash. Plenty of hand-clapping and “Oi ! Oi ! Oi !” bleed from the end of track 2 into the more melodic barstool-burning “Out Of Work Musician”. Who woulda thought these guys could pull off a buzzsaw guitar solo !!!???

It isn’t all gold though, both “No Shame” and “Dear Jerry” are more filler that strays into the new, exciting and slightly-nausiating world of early-80s synth-pop. “Dear Jerry” actually sounds likes a sped-up version of a Phil Collins song, or maybe the Police’s “Roxanne”.

And Then there’s the weirdness that is “Skylab (Theme From The Monks)”… Wtf ??? I haven’t decided whether this song is the most brilliant piece of Sci-Fi/Western Ambient Cabaret music music ever, or a sick and twisted rip on Queen’s “Flash Gorden” soundtrack. It’s probably both… You should have a listen.

Despite making a great couple albums, the Monks disappeared into obscurity and were never heard from again by anyone other than hard-core fans (most of which hide in caves, protecting their mountains of discarded 8-track tapes).

It would seem that the fans of the Monks are of a more cult-ish, underground variety and tend to avoid chat-room fandom in favour of nocturnal beer drinking and goat worship. Do not attempt to approach any of these strange and disheveled individuals without first listening to The Monks “Bad Habits” album at least twice.
