Anyway, it's a fine AUD recording, very listenable & enjoyable! And you'll notice they do 3 Christmas Songs: "Merry Christmas Baby" - a blues-y romp & a lot of fun! "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" - a stellar song with excellent guitar... Trust me, you've never heard it played like this before...and "Happy Xmas(War Is Over)" - Lennon's Christmas anthem for peace sounds pretty good Boston-ized!

Denis Leary - Merry F#%$in' Christmas - 2004

"Merry F#%$in' Christmas" is a mix of new, previously released, and previously unreleased material.The title track "Merry F#%$in' Christmas" is, as you can probably guess, a very happy sounding Christmas song with not-so-happy lyrics. And it works, with Leary's own angrily sarcastic-toned singing style. Both a studio and a live version are included. There are also two studio tracks from the "Lock N' Load" album.This leaves three tracks of live stand-up material and three bizarre studio recordings. The stand-up stuff ("Fat Guy on the Plane", "Jack Goes to School", and "Dogsledding") are all great. The three other studio tracks, "WWWW", "Coffin Rap", and "The Theme from Jesus & The Gang" sound like the bizarre songs you'd hear in between tracks on "Lock 'N Load". Not surprisingly, "WWWW" was taken from the "Lock 'N Load" sessions.

If you're familiar with Denis Leary, you know what to expect. Irreverence, strong language, strong opinions, and a "who-cares-what-you-think" attitude. Denis takes on the holiday season here, and no religion is spared. He skewers every faith in his own inimitable style.

The new offering from Denis Leary is a great stocking stuffer. The title song is a Christmas CLASSIC! The CD is only about twenty minutes long but is an interesting mix of music, stand up, bits and oddities. The stand up material is funny and makes me wish Leary would do another stand up special. It includes the song Jesus and theGang (which I believe is sung by producer/cowriter Chris Phillips) from the Comedy Central spoof Contest Searchlight. My favorite bits are WWWW, a spot on parody of lite FM radio and Coffin' Rap, a cough with a beat. There are a couple of bits from Lock and Load that are out there to say the least. The CD closes with a live version of Merry F'n Christmas, the Ultimate Christmas song.

Denis Leary's latest CD "Merry F***in' Christmas," is a hilarious comedy e.p. There are two versions of the title song, one in the studio, one live on stage. It's one of the greatest Christmas songs written. It also features two stand-up bits from Denis that were on two "Comics Come Home" specials and a bit from a Comedy Central "Just For Laughs" special.The rest of the Cd is filler. Two tracks, "Insane Cowboy (In Africa")" and "Deaf Mute Cocktail Party" appeared on his last CD "Lock N' Load," which I've skipped over now on two CDs. It also contains a sort-of funny bit titled "WWWW" parodying radio stations, a bizarre kids show song - "The Theme from Jesus and the Gang," and the annoying "Coffin Rap" - which is Leary coughing a hip-hop beat.

There are ten tracks here, but Denis Leary's Merry F#%$in' Christmas is really a between-albums, get-it-out-for-the-holiday-shopping-season EP. Combining a jaunty melody with sour, foul, and hilarious lyrics, the title track is the reason to pick this up. The caustic tune is funny and fast -- it'll take a couple listens to catch it all -- and you get two versions, one in the studio and one from the Comics Come Home special. The non-holiday filler is generally good, half of it being from Leary's Comedy Central appearances while the rest is sourced from sessions for 1997's Lock 'n Load album, including two unreleased outtakes. It may only run 20 minutes, but it's priced right and contains a couple treasures for fans.

Hillbilly Holiday!

Woo Hoo! One of my all time favs! All the usual (and unusual) suspects are here hootin' and hollerin' up a storm.

Rhino records did a great service to country fans when they released this collection of rare country Christmas songs that had been unobtainable. Since then some tracks, including those by Brenda Lee and Buck Owens, have been released on CD's by the individual artists, but most have not. Now that this collection is out of print, those tracks that have not been re-issued elsewhere are again hard to find.

Brenda Lee's I'm gonna lasso Santa Claus is a socially-aware song about how Santa discriminates against the poor. Two Buck Owens tracks are featured - his classic Santa looked a lot like Daddy and Christmas time's a-coming - this latter being an original song, not to be confused with the Bill Monroe song of the same title that opens this collection. Bill's song has become a standard on bluegrass Christmas albums.

This collection contains many rarities from (mostly) the fifties and sixties by George Jones (My mom and Santa Claus), Tex Ritter (Christmas carols by the old corral), Ernest Tubb (not his classic Blue Christmas, which is easy to find, but I'll be walking the floor this Christmas), Hank Snow (Reindeer boogie, revived by Trisha Yearwood on her excellent Christmas album, Sweetest gift), Faron Young (I'm gonna tell Santa Claus on you), Loretta Lynn (To heck with ole Santa Claus) and Christmas boogie (Davis sisters).

If you are into country music of the fifties and sixties and you enjoy original Christmas music, it doesn't get better than this. Only Pretty paper (Willie Nelson) and It came upon the might clear (Louvin brothers) are versions of songs that are well known - in Willie's case, the original version. I'm thankful that I bought this when it first came out. I wish you the best of luck finding a copy - or persuading Rhino to re-release it.

Christmas With The Three Stooges

Recorded WAY past their prime in the early '60's. This Christmas with The Three Stooges is Curly-less and even Shemp-less. This rare EP was put out on disc by Rhino in the early 1980s. It features Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe DeRita butchering familiar yule tunes with alternate lyrics and intentional off-key singing. Truth was that the Stooges were accomplished singers; but as with Lucille Ball and her singing and dancing, it's funnier if the performance is bad. If one can find this 12" EP or cassette at a reasonable price, it's worth adding to your wacky Christmas music collection.

I originally purchased the album when I was 16 years old, and never forgot the excitement, the passion and the skill of these vocalists who defined the quality of popular music in the 1960s and beyond. After seeing the Temptations' movie recently, based on the book written by Otis Williams, I rushed to purchase "Temptations Live" the CD. I assure you that the excellence of the Temptations' music is only enhanced by their live performance. The medleys led by Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin (Kudos to Ruffin's rendition of "What Now My Love"/"Yesterday" -- joined by basso profundo Melvin Franklin, who sings in French!) and the uptempo versions of their landmark songs ("My Girl," "My Baby," "I Want a Love I Can See," "Get Ready" and others) compel you to sing along and dance. You can only imagine the exquisite moves that the Temptations executed for the audience. Special mention to the always fabulous David Ruffin, whose powerful and throaty baritone is charismatic, and to the underappreciated Paul Williams, who took you to church with "Don't Look Back". Thirty-five years after I first purchased the record, "Temptations Live" the CD is now jammin' in my car stereo. Thanks to Motown and Soul Man Red for bringing back the music and the memories! "Temptations Live" is an outstanding album and anyone who wants to understand what Motown was all about - class, style and above all quality music enhanced with the excitement of a live performance, should grab this recording. I only wish it was accompanied by a video, so we could fully enjoy the brilliance of this classic and classy quintet. Temptations Forever!

Gettin' Ready - The Temptations 1966

'Gettin' Ready' is one of my favorite Temptation lp's!
The marvelous title track alone, with Eddie Kendricks gliding into the stratosphere, made this an instant winner. There were several fine songs that weren't hits, such as "Not Now, I'll Tell You Later" and "I've Been Good To You," and there sure wasn't anything wrong with powerhouse cuts like "Ain't Too Proud To Beg." The Temptations would score four straight number one hits in the mid-'60s, each one an unforgettable classic. No soul collection should not be without this wonderful set of songs.

Martha and The Vandellas Live! September 1967

This is one of the best live albums any Motown artist has recorded and all three girls, as well as the orchestra, conducted by David T. Walker, are in fine form! You will especially enjoy Betty Kelly's impromptu solo during the "Dancing In The Street Medley" but all of the tracks are superb!

An interesting side-note: the fact that Martha chose to sing a medley of "Do Right Woman" & "Respect" as a tribute to Aretha Franklin (who was in the audience) caused some bad blood between them, because Aretha felt no one but her should touch her songs (Did she forget all the Ben E. King songs she covered around this time, as well as the songs she did by other artists?) but she needs to get over it - there is only one Aretha, and, much as I love Gladys Knight, Martha did a better job with "Do Right Woman" than Gladys did on her live Motown LP ("All In A Knight's Work.")

If you are looking for the Stevie Wonder version of "for Once In My Life," you won't find it here: only Stevie performed the song with that arrangement. Of the other versions, Martha's is second only to the late Paul Williams of the Temptations' rendition of it found on their Live At The Copa and TCB albums.

Although, the cover is similar to classic "Temptations Live!" album from this period, Motown used the same technique with their "Recorded Live On Stage" series and no one said anything. Anyway, this is the group at its best ( unlike The O'Jays or The Marvelettes live albums, which were recorded too early in their careers and, though many people say the fast pace of Diana Ross & The Supremes live in concert didn't work for them, it definitely works here! A great buy and a great album. And Martha has only gone on to sound better and better with time.

To hear what she sounds like today live, please pick up the DVD "Dancing In The Street," which features the last live performance Martha did with Mary Wells and David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks, which was recorded at the perfect time (before Mary, David or Eddie lost their voices!)
