Wicked Lester - 1971

Wicked Lester was a New York-based rock and roll group. The group was formed (as Rainbow) in 1970, and its most notable early members were bassist Gene Klein (later Gene Simmons) and rhythm guitarist Stanley Eisen (later Paul Stanley). In 1971 the band changed their name to Wicked Lester, and in the fall of that year they recorded an album for Epic Records, which was never released.
Wicked Lester's music featured elements of rock and roll, folk rock, and pop. Simmons and Stanley, feeling that the group lacked a unifying musical vision, began forming a second version of Wicked Lester in late 1972. This second Wicked Lester, with an emphasis on more straightforward rock and roll, as well as on theatrics, became Kiss in early 1973.
During their brief existence, Wicked Lester performed in public twice. The first show took place at the Rivoli Theatre in South Fallsburg, New York in April 1971. The second, during the summer of 1971, was at an Atlantic City, New Jersey hotel hosting a B'nai B'rith Youth Organization event. Not long after that show, the band suffered a major setback when they had all of their musical gear stolen.
After a chance meeting with Electric Lady Studios engineer Ron Johnsen, Wicked Lester was given the opportunity to record some demos in the fall of 1971. Johnsen, who produced the demo tape, shopped it to a few labels, with no success. Eventually the tape was screened by Epic Records, who purchased the masters and agreed to fund the recording of a full album.
The entire recording process, which adhered to a haphazard schedule, took nearly a year to complete. When the completed album was presented to Don Ellis, Epic's A&R director, he stated that he hated the album and was not going to release it. The next day, Wicked Lester manager Lew Linet requested and received the group's release from Epic Records.
It was at this time that Klein and Eisen (now using the stage names Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley) decided that one of the reasons for Wicked Lester's lack of success was their lack of a singular image and musical vision. They made the decision to start a new version of the group, and began auditioning for a drummer in the fall of 1972.
Whereas Wicked Lester's original sound was rooted in varied musical styles (folk and pop, for instance), when Simmons and Stanley decided to recruit new members, they also made the decision to focus on a more aggressive and simple style of rock and roll. The first new member added to Wicked Lester was drummer Peter Criss, who had placed an ad in Rolling Stone. The new Wicked Lester, without a recording contract, began a strict and regular regimen of rehearsals.
In November 1972, the group arranged a showcase with Don Ellis, the Epic Records executive who earlier had rejected Wicked Lester's album. While one Epic executive, Tom Werman, was impressed by the power and theatrics of this new incarnation of Wicked Lester, Ellis once again turned them down. As Ellis was leaving, Peter Criss's brother (who was drunk) vomited on his foot.
In early December, Paul Stanley placed an ad in The Village Voice stating, "LEAD GUITARIST WANTED with Flash and Ability. Album Out Shortly. No time wasters please," rather than the historically incorrect "with Flash and Balls." The ad ran for two issues (December 7, 1972 and December 14, 1972) and the band had to run several sessions of auditions. One early audition was by the strange Paul "Ace" Frehley who showed up wearing different colored shoes. Frehley was asked back for a second audition and was a member of the band by Christmas 1972. Within a few weeks, the group had changed its name to Kiss and played their first concert on January 30, 1973.
The proper recording sessions for Wicked Lester's album, which began in November 1971 at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village, took place during multiple sessions and were finished in July 1972. The album was a mixture of original material and covers, showcasing the group's eclectic style. Three of the songs recorded for the Wicked Lester album would later resurface as Kiss songs, with varying degrees of similarity:
- "We Wanna Shout It Out Loud": A cover version of a song that was originally recorded by The Hollies in 1970. The chorus would serve as the inspiration for "Shout It Out Loud" from 1976's Destroyer, although the two songs are completely different in every other respect.
- "Love Her All I Can": Written by Paul Stanley, this would resurface on 1975's Dressed to Kill. Both versions feature similar arrangements.
- "She": Written by Gene Simmons and Steve Coronel prior to the formation of Wicked Lester, this was also re-recorded for the Dressed to Kill album. The melody and arrangement in the two versions are nearly identical, although the original had congas and a flute that the Kiss version did not.
The only part of Wicked Lester's album to actually be released, initially, was the cover art, which was used for The Laughing Dogs' debut album in 1979. CBS Records, who owned the rights to the album, remixed it and planned to release it in late 1976 to capitalize on Kiss's commercial popularity. Kiss and Neil Bogart, the president of Casablanca Records (Kiss's label), purchased the album from CBS for $137,500 and never released it. Eventually, Kiss bought Bogart's share outright. Three songs from the album ("Keep Me Waiting," "She," and "Love Her All I Can"), however, were released in 2001 as part of Kiss's five-disc box set.

Interesting facts:
- (We Want To) Shout It Out Loud was originally recorded by The Hollies and is not the same song as Shout It Out Loud from 1976's Destroyer album.
- Wicked Lester lead guitarist, Steven Coronel, was a mutual friend of Gene and Paul's and introduced the two of them.
- Neither Paul, nor Gene, EVER want these recordings released because they think they are horrible (Paul calls the Wicked Lester recordings "eclectic crap").
- Wicked Lester only played together twice before recording the album.
- Other songs recorded include Eskimo Sun (which later appeared in a vastly different form as Only You on Music From The Elder), Suitor, About Her, Long Road, and Stanley The Parrot (which became Strutter on KISS' first album).
- The Wicked Lester album was produced by Ron Johnsen who also produced Peter Criss' pre-KISS album, Chelsea in 1971.
- The proposed cover for the Wicked Lester album features an evil-looking young boy sitting on some steps with a dog. This cover would resurface in 1979 (CBS Records had placed it in storage) on an album for the group, The Laughing Dogs.
- Gene and Paul sang a commercial jingle for AMC trucks that got them the exposure needed to gain studio time with Eddie Kramer to record the demos for an album deal.

Fuse - 1969

Fuse offers a fascinating glimpse into the musical beginnings of Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson before superstardom beckoned as members of Cheap Trick, but it also stands on its own as a prime example of keyboard driven psychedelic pop, circa 1969.

Fuse was the predecessor of the famous 70's hard rock american band Cheap Trick, earlier called The Grim Reapers. As Fuse a solitary album was issued prior to guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson allying themselves with ex NAZZ members vocalist Robert 'Stewkey' Antoni and drummer Thom Mooney for a revised NAZZ.

Itis a relief to have FINALLY found this on CD!!! I have loved the unique sound these boys put out since I first heard a friends dads vinyl L.P. copy of this album about 30 years ago, and have not heard it in for the last 18 years. Great tunes, my favorites being 4/4 3/4, Show Me and To Your Health. Rick Nielsen mainly plays Keyboards on this, but he does display some early signs of songwriting ability as in Show Me and To Your Health. The singer was only 17 years old when this was released, what a strong voice for a kid!!! Tom Peterson has to be one of the most UNDERrated Bass players in popular rock. Just listen to his tight, chunky-bass on this album, and he was only 19 years old! Each track is different, nothing seems repetitive. That is to say, the guitarist, keyboards everyone sounds different on each track. Do not expect to hear any "Cheap Trick sounding" material on this album. It is Hard-rock, a bit progressive, hard hitting music. This is a very good album, played by a bunch of Rockford kids, and is highly recomended by me.

A 1st gen audience recording. Jim is pretty drunk for this show and has a lot of fun with the audience. Unlike in Miami, he doesn't berate the crowd, but does threaten to kill someone if his monitors aren't turned up as "Five To One" starts. "Hey listen, if I can't hear myself a little bit louder than that, I'm just gonna quit, go out, and kill some people! C'mon!" The band keeps vamping but Jim continues to playfully talk with the audience. After over six minutes of banter he asks, "What song are we singing?" and finally begins the lyrics to "Five To One." After a surprisingly tight version of "When The Music's Over," the band goes into "Soul Kitchen" and during the song's second verse, Jim misses his cue. Toward the end of the song, the band realizes that Jim isn't interested in finishing the lyrics and they break into "Light My Fire." By the end of the concert, Jim is incoherent and screaming more and more until he finally jumps into the audience. He manages to get back onstage (with the help of a number of stage hands) and barely finishes "Light My Fire" before leaving the stage. At the very end of the tape, you can hear the house announcer ask the audience for Jim's coat. ("Has anyone seen Jim Morrison's coat?") Definitely an interesting night as far as Doors shows go. Only wish we had a better quality recording. Enjoy.

The Melachrino Strings - Music For Dining!

I Sure Hope You're Hungry!

George Melachrino never was quite as bold and brassy as those of his contemporaries who tend to be featured in collections of Lounge or Space-Age Pop music. His records are much more tame and, perhaps, stuffy than most by such as Nelson Riddle and George Shearing.

When I was a kid there was a radio station in our market that broadcast music such as this. They would play Perry Como but not Dean Martin, 101 Strings but not The Hollyridge Strings, and Roger Miller but not Jimmy Smith. Station personnel didn't use words like Swing, Hot or Cool on the air. What they played never strayed from a very narrow path. What they played they called Beautiful Music.

And that's exactly what this is. Lush, lovely and wholly unoffensive, this music is where Easy Listening's reputation as "Background" or "Elevator" music came from. These days, though, I find it soothing, nostalgiac, and even unusual in that there is nothing exactly like it still being produced. Sometimes I don't want my music to be too exciting or too challenging. Sometimes I just wanna sit down and eat dinner and be made to feel comfortable. That's what Beautiful Music does best.


How to enjoy these records:

Prepare your favorite tuna salad. Spread over split English muffins or
two slices of bread. Top with slices of cheese, and place on tray in broiler until cheese melts.

Prepare a beverage of your choice.

Start music.

Sit down.

Shut up.

Eat and Enjoy.

One For The Roadies

It was May 4th 1974. Genesis had spent many months on the road since September 1973. The ‘Selling England By The Pound’ tour was now drawing to a close, with only three more shows left to perform. Much has been said about this classic Genesis album and tour, and of the band’s three-day stay at the Academy of Music in New York City. May 5th would see Genesis fall victim to equipment theft, forcing them to cancel that night’s gig and perform a double-header on the following day. No complete recordings of these last two shows on May 6th are known to exist. The last complete recorded performance of a ‘Selling England By The Pound’ show comes from May 4th, and it is this recording which we bring to you now.

In terms of sound quality, this show stands out as perhaps the best audience recording from the whole tour. The balance is almost perfect (Steve Hackett’s guitar sounds a little distant at times) and the overall sound is crisp and clear. Bass lines have excellent depth while higher frequencies reveal every tiny percussive detail, something quite rare in audience recordings. The lead vocals are well balanced in the mix, with every word and intonation clearly heard. One can almost visualise Peter Gabriel pulling away from the microphone as he always did when he had to push his voice to hit the higher notes. The quality of this recording suggests that the taper had excellent equipment while the overall balance shows that he was very well positioned in the hall. The acoustics of the Academy of Music were outstanding.

As for the performance, May 4th, 1974 saw Genesis in fine form, despite the fatigue of the long tour and the frustration of having to deal with annoying technical problems. The in-between song banter shows just how patient and inventive Peter and Phil could be when they needed to inject some humour into the proceedings to relieve the tension caused by those nerve-wracking gaps. This kind of spontaneity always created a real bond between the band and their audience. A solid connection with the audience has always been one of the band’s strong points, and this night was no exception. As was so often the case, it was Mike Rutherford’s equipment which was the source of the trouble, but the big man’s performance did not suffer and he was, as usual, solid as a rock.

Steve Hackett was his classic self, delivering a perfect mixture of raw aggression and emotional, delicate licks. Tony Banks, perhaps the least demonstrative of all star keyboard players, also offered one of his finest performances of the entire tour, despite a strange mellotron hiccup during the instrumental section of ‘The Cinema Show’. He soon made up for that one by offering a spotless rendition of the piano intro to ‘Firth Of Fifth’, not an easy feat on his old electric piano. Peter Gabriel’s voice was in fine form on the night, though surprisingly he did forget one verse towards the end of ‘Supper’s Ready’, a rare occurrence indeed. Peter went into the next verse quite quickly, throwing his band mates for a second or two in the process.

Someone once said that a band is only as good as its drummer, and we believe this is very true. Phil Collins once remarked: “A bad band with a great drummer will sound better than a great band with a bad drummer.” Well, Genesis were truly blessed by being a great band whose world-class drummer made them sound even greater. One cannot emphasise enough the quality of Phil’s drumming over the years. He was, and still is, one of the most inventive and musical percussionists in rock. His work on Genesis studio albums was always immaculate but his performance on stage could propel the music to new heights. That night in New York City, Phil was on fire, tight on every beat, each fill and roll as perfect as the last.

So, despite some minor glitches, this was an exemplary performance from Genesis, one of the best of the entire tour. With only two more shows to be performed at the same venue, the ‘Selling England By The Pound’ tour was coming to an end, leaving messrs Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett and Rutherford to move on to the complexities of ‘The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway’. No-one knew at the time of course that these last few shows would be the fans’ final opportunity to see the classic five-piece line-up performing the ‘Selling England’ material live on stage, as well as ‘Horizons’ and, sadly, ‘Supper’s Ready’. Two years later, when Genesis reinstated some of these songs in their live set, Peter Gabriel was no longer with the band and the music itself had been rearranged somewhat. As for the piano intro to ‘Firth Of Fifth’, Tony would never play it again on stage after the 1973-74 tour. This concert stands as a perfect example of the lasting legacy left by these five great musicians who played together as the magical entity called Genesis. Enjoy!

Notes from the Re-Master

The most obvious problem with this recording was the speed error. It is unclear if this error was initially present on the master or on the 1st generation source for this remaster. Either way, the speed error was very noticeable and followed a predictable pattern. Once identified, it was easy to correct. Tonality was then adjusted to balance the sound. Dynamics were altered to emphasize the dramatic nature of the music. There was crackle heard intermittently which was reduced as much as possible. The show was then re-tracked.

Back in the late 1980s, there was a Pink Floyd Weekend on MTV to promote their tour across the US. At that time (1988), stereo television broadcasts were rare - I think MTV might've been the only channel which broadcast in stereo regularly. You had to rent a special decoder box to get the stereo signal - and virtually nobody had a stereo VCR either. You can see why I am so excited to be able to tell you that I have a Beta tape made by a stereo Beta machine by a guy with a stereo decoder box

Pink Floyd - 1966--1967 - Outtakes From Outer Space (shn)

Ahh Outtakes from Outer Space!! One of the first boots I ever received! It is an excellent recording for starters who wish to hear what The Pink Floyd (w/ Syd) sounded like. Most of it is from live performance, but some are studio outtakes. The sound quality is very good, but I think most of these can be found on other recordings, in better quality. What makes this recording special to me (beside the the fact that it was one of my first) is the track listing. All of Syd's works (with the exception of course of the cover of Slim Harpo's "I'm a King Bee"). What makes this recording a must, imho, is the two studio outtakes from 1967 (from the Piper at the Gates of Dawn studio recording sessions) track 5 Experiment (also known as Sunshine) and track 14 Silas Lane (which was later recycled by Syd as Swan Lee (Silas Lang)for his solo album). Especially that last one, AMAZING!!! The only drawback is that it is too short (1:16). Makes you wonder how they would have sounded as finished tracks on the PatGoD lp. Also included is a rare outtake of Milky Way, which isn't a Floyd outtake but rather a rare Syd solo take (strangely enough they didn't date it; my guess would be 1970 for the Madcap session)

Rush - 1974-12-05 - New York, USA

This show was originally performed for FM radio broadcast a couple months prior to the release of "Fly By Night." Neil has only been with the band for a few months at this point, but the playing is tight and precise. The FBN songs are still coming together, so some songs, most notably "Best I Can" contain some alternate lyrics. The structure of "Fly By Night" is different, with the guitar solo coming after the vocal bridge and a completely different ending. We get a rare treat in "Working Man," when Alex delivers a guitar solo outside of the normal structure of the song. "Bad Boy" is introduced as a Beatles song, although it was originally written by Larry Williams (I don?t remember the Beatles ever doing this one, actually). It?s amusing to hear the polite clapping of what sounds like about five or ten folks in the studio. Geddy?s soft-spoken comments in between songs is a sharp contrast to the very hard-edged performance. An excellent pseudo- audience show. Apparently, several mikes were set up around the studio, with only a very basic soundboard feed. The result is a very well-mixed sound -- at times, you can almost imagine that you?re listening to the "Rush" album.

Rush - 1975-05-15 - Cleveland, OH

This show comes from a few months after the release of FBN. The performance is what you might expect from this era, but it is special for a few reasons. First, it contains full performances of both "Beneath, Between & Behind" and "Fly By Night." Second, it captures the band in a period when they were using a very raw, stripped-down sound. This was originally an FM broadcast, as can be discerned from the DJ break halfway through. For the time, this is actually an amazing recording. The tape sounds as though it came from a soundboard feed. Overall though, a nice little show.

John Lennon - Willowbrook Rehearsals - August 22nd-26th, 1972.

This 2 CD set features rehearsals at Butterfly Studios and The Fillmore East on August 22nd thru 26th, 1972. John & Yoko and the Elephants Momory Band were preparing for the One to One concerts which would be held in a little over a weeks time from these rehearsal sessions. These CD's consist of mostly old rock and roll standards,and the sound quality is very good on most of the tracks. The One to One concerts took place at Madison Square Garden in New York on 30th August 1972. The event was in aid of a local charity, the Willowbrook Handicapped Children's Home. John and Yoko (backed by Elephant's Memory) were the main attraction at both shows (afternoon and evening), they performed New York City, It's So Hard, Move On Fast, Woman Is The Nigger Of The World, Sisters, O Sisters, Well Well Well, Born In A Prison, Instant Karma!, Mother, We're All Water, Come Together, Imagine, Open Your Box, Cold Turkey, Don't Worry Kyoko and Hound Dog. The evening performance dropped Don't Worry Kyoko but added Give Peace A Chance as an encore in which they were joined on stage by the other artists on the bill (Sha Na Na, Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack). This isn't one of the easier Lennon Boots to find, so if you see it don't hesitate to pick it up. For now grab it here.

Zep Classics

One detour before our last blast of Bonzos. This is a disc I received about 8 years ago, no art, no idea who made it, but luckily I saved the track listing. It chronicles songs that Led Zeppelin covered/borrowed/stole/appropriated, depending on your point of view. Zep scholars will probably understand the inclusion of some of the stranger tracks (I'll admit some of these elude me), while amateur musicologists (of which I am one) will delight in the rare and historical gems presented here. The level of thievery/allusion/homage (again depending on your point of view) is surprising on some of these tracks. The maker also included two fun bonuses (or "bonii" as one of my highschool teachers used to say), the latter of which I upgraded with a less-crackly one from my own collection. Enjoy!

Bonzo Dog Band - Colour Me Pop (speed-corrected) 12-21-68

And here is the remainder of the URBAN SPACEMEN DO EXIST! boot, the Bonzos on UK TV's "Colour Me Pop." This recording always bugged me, and it comes from an off-line source (like a reel-to-reel recorder), but although I can't fix that, I did discover it ran pretty slow, with a 7% lag (no wonder!). Anyhow, I fixed all that now, and God bless the fellow who preserved it for us, because it supposedly no longer exists. However, a pristine "Canyons of Your Mind" popped up on the COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS disc, which I have substituted here. I went ahead and included full artwork for the USDE boot, since between this and the Amsterdam show I posted earlier, you'll have the whole thing.
