MUSIC POWER _ 22 Original Hits!

This one is from mid-1974 and contains a wide-ranging selection of songs which were sizeable hits in Canada. The biggest US hit here by far is The Sweet's "Little Willy" and that was way back in 1972! The rest were minor hits at best and others - like Gordon Sinclair's truly flesh crawling "The Americans" and Stories' version of a UK Roger Whittaker hit - will be total obscurities to most. Sinclair's offering is one of those where you really do have to hide behind the sofa but there are delights for the unitiated in the Natural Four's smooth and soulful "Can This Be Real" and "Painted Ladies" by Ian Thomas which sounds uncannily like the band America. Whatever you think of the songs, I guarantee you'll love the sound!

Smokin’ In The Boys' Room – Brownsville Station
Spiders And Snakes – Jim Stafford
Rockin’ Roll Baby – Stylistics
Painted Ladies – Ian Thomas
Pillow Talk – Sylvia Robinson
Hurts So Good – Millie Jackson
Mammy Blue – Stories
Pretty Lady – Lighthouse
Where Peaceful Waters Flow – Gladys Knight & The Pips
When You Say Love – Sonny & Cher
The Americans – Gordon Sinclair
Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose – Dawn
Keeper Of The Castle – Four Tops
Two Divided By Love – Grass Roots
By The Devil (I Was Tempted) – Blue Mink
Oh Girl – Chi-Lites
Can This Be Real – Natural Four
Tonight – Raspberries
Little Willy – Sweet
River – Joe Simon
Drift Away – Dobie Gray
I’ve Got So Much To Give – Barry White

K TEL SOUNDS SPECTACULAR - 1975

I'm stumbling through the crawlspace in our home looking for God knows what and amidst the rubble I come across a somewhat sealed and tattered box of long forgotten vinyl Lp's that for some inexplicable reason I had never been able to part with and always took up a dusty place in the storage area of the many places I have called home.
These old Lp's date back to my late elementary/ early junior high years in the early to mid 70's and they have trailed along after me ever since.
I have a copy of this in mint condition which I bought from a fantastic record store in Edmonton called called "Millers" which specialised in deleted and obscure albums and was based in a rather spooky but huge old warehouse near Jasper Avenue. Somehow these guys used to buy up huge quantities of overstocked albums from the States - often called "cut-outs" in respect of the way the record companies "cut out" part of the cardboard cover to stop the albums retailing for full price - and would sell them for peanuts. It was heaven for the teenage me.
I remember the check-out guy's face as I once dumped nearly 20 albums on the counter (I counted them!), the fruits of a whole day's digging and delving. Extravagant? No - I got change from a 20 dollar bill!
Did I ever play them? Hell, no, not all of them but they were nice to have!
"Sounds Spectacular" cost me all of 50 cents and it's an eclectic mix.
This one is a 1975 K-Tel collection from the USA - the Canadian version has a very different tracklisting - which contains the usual odd bedfellows. An album which mixes Bachman Turner Overdrive, Frankie Valli, Disco Tex, the Charlie Daniels Band, the Rubettes and Fanny has got to be interesting! Unlike the '75 vinyl edition, these songs all run full length and don't skip! Re-live your mis-spent youth all over again ...Enjoy...and cry your nostalgic eyes out.

1. Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye
2. The Edgar Winter Group - Free Ride
3. Ohio Players - Fire
4. Bachman-Turner-Overdrive - Roll On Down The Highway
5. Golden Earring - Radar Love
6. Redbone - Come & Get Your Love
7. Polly Brown - Up In A Puff Of Smoke
8. Fanny - Butter Boy
9. Rubettes - Sugar Baby Love
10. B.T. Express - Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)
11. Frankie Valli - My Eyes Adored You
12. Shirley & Company - Shame, Shame, Shame
13. Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes - Get Dancin'
14. Nothing From Nothing – Billy Preston
15. Atlanta Rhythm Section - Doraville
16. The Charlie Daniels Band - The South's Gonna Do It Again
17. New Birth - It's Impossible
18. William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You Got
19. The Main Ingredient - Just Don't Want To Be Lonely
20. B.W. Stevenson - My Maria

K-TEL: THE SECRET HISTORY!

Something that was lost in the CD revolution 20 years ago was the beauty of the record label. Capitol, Decca, Warner Brothers, Polydor: true design classics. Think of the Beatles and you think of black paper labels with a Parlophone pound-sign logo and the big "Capitol swirl" to show that you hadn't just bought a shrunken 78. Blondie's "Heart of Glass" could only ever be on the powder-blue Chrysalis label with a butterfly flapping in the corner.
Between the ages of seven and 14, though, the only label that counted for me was a murky brown colour with two white curvy lines, something that no one could mistake for the work of Barnett Newman or Peter Saville. It was the K-Tel label, home of the hits - usually 20 of them but sometimes as many as 24. For a boy on a dollar a week pocket money, K-Tel was the only label that could give me any hope of keeping up with the kids at school whose dads bought them a hit single or two every Saturday (usually on flashy labels such as Bell or RAK).
Every three months or so, a new K-Tel compilation would appear with a snappy generic title - Music Power, Disco Rocket, Star Party - and for around three bucks my collection would be bolstered with anything from Cockney Rebel and Pilot to War's "Low Rider" (cool) or Pussycat's "Mississippi" (not so). Philly soul, novelty, hard-rock, glam, whatever David Dundas was meant to be - it was all pop music to K-Tel. They were the kings.
Aged 12, more than anything in the world I wanted to work for K-Tel.The man whose job I coveted was Don Reedman, an Aussie who was in at the beginning and made a bomb with the Classic Rock and Hooked On Classics series.

K-Tel's boom years came to an abrupt halt in 1983. Squeezed out, K-Tel had ceased making records by the late Eighties, and reverted to its original purpose - selling kitchen gadgets.
The label's place in bri-nylon pop culture history is secure - the number of hits (five million at the last count) on a fabulous website called ktelclassics.com is testament to this. When you get down to it, K-Tel stood for pop in its purest form: Ultravox may still whine about the injustice of "Vienna" being kept off the top by "Shaddap You Face", but when you are sandwiched between Racey and the Gibson Brothers on a K-Tel comp there's no place for pretension or revisionism. It may not have been Motown, but K-Tel produced dozens of perfectly formed time machines. Your local thrift shop is waiting to transport you.

CONCERT REVIEW

Seems like old times: Van Halen rocks arena

COURTNEY DEVORES
cdevores@charlotteobserver.com

The last time Van Halen performed in Charlotte with Roth as its frontman, he had just turned 30, gas was $1.21 a gallon and tickets to the show at the old Charlotte Coliseum were $12.50.Twenty-three years later, the band's original members are all over 50 and guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son Wolfgang has replaced original bassist Michael Anthony.

The show sold out in a matter of minutes in August, and the arena was packed when the band hit the stage around 8:30 p.m., following a short but sweet set of pop and reggae-tinged R&B by Kymani Marley.

Fans assumed after well-publicized fighting, ill will and a couple of false starts over the past 11 years that the group would never reunite. But earlier this year the Van Halen brothers announced that Roth would rejoin the fold. If the group can keep egos and tempers in check (sources say the three original members arrived on separate buses for rehearsals), the reunion could be the biggest tour of the decade.

Any animosity wasn't apparent on stage as Roth and Eddie Van Halen saddled up next to each other, smiling, during "Everybody Wants Some" and "Dance the Night Away." Roth and Wolfgang Van Halen even sang "Oh Pretty Woman" side by side.

The younger Van Halen proved to be a showy player and spot-on backing vocalist, although he didn't yet prowl the stage like a seasoned vet.

His post rehab father looked skinny, but cut, as did his brother. In fact, the original members all looked fit, though none ran around the stage like they did 25 years ago.

"You Really Got Me" started things off with the band sticking to the set list that was leaked on the internet last week. Highlights included "Beautiful Girls," "Unchained," and "Hot For Teacher." The group saved its biggest single and only #1 pop song, "Jump," for the encore.

Roth left the band in 1985, scoring several pop hits on his own. His former band outlasted his solo success, topping the mainstream rock charts 11 times without him.But to many fans it just wasn't the same without the flamboyant, larger-than-life Roth jumping and posing out front like an uber-charismatic game show host.

One fan compared him to Liberace strutting in his embroidered jackets and skintight leather striped pants. What might be overlooked in favor of his over-the-top persona is his voice, which was in peak form Thursday. He easily met and held notes that younger singers like Jon Bon Jovi just can't reach anymore.

Flo & Eddie - Illegal, Immoral & Fattening (1974)

Flo & Eddie are both impressive singers and very funny comedians, and both aspects of their talent are on display here, from the pop sheen of "Rebecca" to the sidesplitting return of The Sanzini Brothers. Formerly of The Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman jumped ship in mid 1970 only to end up with Frank Zappa and The Mothers circa 1971. Howard and Mark (Flo and Eddie) left Zappa and released a self titled album (Flo and Eddie) and made a huge name for themselves as session backup singers for a veritable who's who of rock royalty.

This, their second album was released in 1973, went out of print in vinyl, then re- released on cd for a very short time only to go out of print yet again. Unless you followed these guys from their youth in the Turtles or you were a Mothers/Zappa fan, or spent your 80's New Years' at The Bottom Line in NYC, chances are you've never heard of them.

These guys are killer players and fantastic singers (evoking some harmonies complex enough to rival the Beach Boys) and all this results in their being gifted musical mimics. And you probably don't have to be a contemporary or a musical historian to get the ... jokes.

The record has two studio cuts at the beginning and the end--some are better than others (the title cut is great fun). But the real reason to buy this disc is for the live set that is sandwiched in between. Though there is some of it I can do without (The Tibetan Memory Trick)--but for the occasional meandering silliness, the rest of it is a true riot. It can veer into the X-rated and the four-letter words, but considering all we have in our face these days, this is tame.
If you are a collector who hunts for the unusual, this is a must for you.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn [LIMITED EDITION] [EXTRA TRACKS] - 192K

Released on August 5, 1967 (about two months after the June 1 UK release of the Beatle's Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band) this excellent debut featured a heady mixture of experimental and avant-garde tendencies, psychedelia, and lengthy instrumental passages that placed Pink Floyd alongside instrumental bands active at the time such as the Soft Machine (debut album 1968).

This album, as many people know, featured the late Syd Barrett, who was the primary driver behind the Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Although quite different than the later material that made the band famous, I actually prefer the rawer, more experimental side of Pink Floyd and find it to be a very satisfying example of the proto-progressive rock style. Like Sgt. Peppers, this album was also extremely influential and along with Saucerful of Secrets (1968) provided the inspiration for a great deal of the German experimental rock scene (listen to Tangerine Dream's 1970 debut for proof). Of course, Piper at the Gates of Dawn also contributed to the events leading up to the emergence of English progressive rock too.

The lineup at this point included Syd Barrett (electric/acoustic guitars, vocals); Roger Waters (bass, vocals); Rick Wright (organ; vocals); and Nick Mason (drums). In addition to the standard rock instruments, Pink Floyd also treated the studio as an instrument and experimentation with sound effects, feedback, and other types of tape manipulation were very much a part of the soundscape. The playing is also much more adventurous.

In fact, I have to admit that Roger turns in some of his finest bass playing on this album. His style is very aggressive, features loads of octave jumps, and he generally uses the fretboard more than he would during the rest of Pink Floyd's career. Of course, the fact that he played a Rickenbacker certainly did not hurt either. Syd's guitar playing is also very intense and he generates all sorts of otherwordly sounds - many of which sound nothing like an electric guitar. Rick's organ work also provides another nice touch. The songs themselves are very interesting too and run the gamut from short (and bizarre) songs with frequently shifting time signatures, to lengthy and wild instrumental "freak outs".

The (approx.) 10 minute Interstellar Overdrive is a great example of this. The subject matter is also fairly interesting too, and the album lies somewhere in a brambly, dark dimension populated by scarecrows and gnomes etc. I would imagine that this album may have frightened a lot of folks when it came out - it is extremely intense and fairly "intellectual" in its approach.

As has been well documented in just about every book written on Pink Floyd (for example, see Nicholas Schaffners' Saucerful of Secrets (1991); Pink Floyd: In the Flesh by Glenn Povey and Ian Russell (1997)), Syd Barrett's drug problem shattered his already fragile emotional state and a series of increasingly bizarre actions led to his replacement by Dave Gilmour. It is worth noting that Syd was allowed to contribute the track Jugband Blues to the Saucerful of Secrets album, although it was to be his last recorded performance with Pink Floyd.

All in all, this is yet another amazing album to come out of the heady, psychedelic rock scene as it existed in 1967. For those prog rock fans that are interested, other exciting albums from 1967 that might prove enjoyable include Days of Future Passed (Moody Blues); After Bathing at Baxter's (Jefferson Airplane); and two from the Beatles including Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the original release of Pink Floyd's first album 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', a special edition was released via EMI Records on Tues 28th August in North America, and Monday September 3rd in Europe. The packaging, designed by Storm Thorgerson, resembles a cloth-covered book, and holds 3 CD discs, along with a 12-page reproduction Syd Barrett notebook. Discs 1 and 2 contain the full 'Piper' album, represented in both stereo and mono versions. Both have been newly remastered by James Guthrie. Disc 3 includes bonus tracks, including the following: all the Pink Floyd singles from 1967, ('Arnold Layne', 'See Emily Play', and 'Apples And Oranges'), plus the B sides 'Candy And A Current Bun' and 'Paintbox'. Other tracks are a version of 'Interstellar Overdrive' - Take 2 of the original recording sessions, previously only available on an EP in France - and the 1967 stereo version of 'Apples And Oranges'.

The Beatles - 1969 complete A/B Road sessions... a little intro

The Beatles

January, 1969
"A/B Road" session tapes
Also known as The Nagra Reels

To end this Beatles upload frenzy of mine, we'll go into the much over rated 1969 sessions. It's a lot of material because the complete sessions were documented, so to make it easier for all I will only upload the very last two days worth from January 30 - 31, 1969. These two days consisted of both the studio sessions proper (as opposed to mere rehearsals) and the eventual rooftop concert (meant to bring to a close the whole affair.)

For completists I am including some information on the entire set as presented by Purple Chick. This whole series takes up a fair amount of space in my music room as the photo above and the following info will attest to. Trust me...it is a huge undertaking to try and download this baby! (For absolute completists the the entire Twickenham and Apple output can easily be found on the net. Good luck and happy downloading!! Now on with the show:

COMPLETE SET version 1.1
83 CDs
2187 tracks
97 hours, 44 minutes, 7 seconds
Twickenham Studios (Part 1)
Apple Studios (Part 2)

I started trying to collect this set 2 years ago. It gets seeded all kinds of ways. One disc here, one disc there… someone thought it would be nice to encode to .APE on a few I found. Very frustrating to try to collect a set this big that way. Like most people, I only had some pieces.

A gentleman named alGo did manage to collect these though, as they were first being posted. He notes:

This was all downloaded from easytree and then later dimeadozen. It was upped by PC_Eclipse and later by hexer, and, supposedly, they got their sets directly in flac format from Purple Chick (mmm PC and PC_Eclipse. Never thought of that. Who knows...).

They were seeded in small batches of maybe two or three cds. I've made one directory for each day and then put the correspondent discs there, like it should be. Some of the uploaded files had defects and patches were uploaded. Those patches are already applied, as was a later patch from PC to one of the tracks. So this is AB road 1.1 instead of 1.0.

In a disc or two an 'unofficial' patch was uploaded and suggested too. I have NOT replaced the original PC track, but I've put them on a directory inside that disc so everyone can judge and replace it where necessary.

Some of the first batches (that started with the apple sessions) were originally in shn format. Personally, I can't stand shn so I reconverted them to flac level 8 using Flac Frontend. Hope no one really minds about it.

So, alGo did a lot of further work to organize this set. I was still unhappy with having to reference a track list document to browse 2100+ files, so I have named all the tracks, combined into a single folder and added FLAC tags. This is the most complete presentation of this historic set, of over a thousand reels, you will find anywhere. All tracks have been meticulously labeled to include all info for easy browsing, including the DDSI take numbers.

DDSI numbers were published by Doug Sulpy when these tracks were initially pieced together and cataloged, in order of recording, for the most part, and presented in the book, "Drugs, Divorce and a Slipping Image (DDSI). Doug will be releasing an updated version of this book soon, and it is my hope that this set will compliment that nicely – you’ll be able to instantly call up a track while you read about it using the DDSI # assigned by Doug.

This set has been notoriously hard to complete, especially with any consistent lineage. Here is the chain of custody for this set:

THE FILM ENGINEERS - recorded thousands of audio reels over 4 weeks - the people in between

PURPLE CHICK - initial compilation and lots of hard work piecing the reels together

PC_ECLIPSE & HEXER - initial individual distribution of the 83 CDsalGo - initial compiling from the 83 individual Discs to 4 big sets

ROGERLANCELOT - computation of times & track data.

JAMESKG - final compiling and file naming, flac tagging, and fixing a non-compliance problem

I have gone through this set with a fine tooth comb and Doug Sulpy’s 2006 edition book’s list by DDSI #s. I found a few anomalies with track #s and DDSI #s and have re-aligned to Sulpy’s book. Something like 100 or so errors out of all 2187 tracks. I’m pretty sure this is as accurate as the documentation has ever been for this set.

01/02/69 - 2 Discs (2:39:15) 1 double case
01/03/69 - 4 Discs (5:12:33) 2 double cases
01/06/69 - 5 Discs (6:04:03) 2 double cases / 1 single case

Remembering Marc Bolan and T. Rex

Marc Bolan remains as iconic today as when his life was cut so tragically short on 16th September 1977, just two weeks before his 30th birthday. Revered by all who discover him Bolan is the quintessential embodiment of the 1970s music scene, whose influence is felt as strongly today as when he first swept onto the British music scene in 1970.
Marc Bolan holds a unique position in the history of rock ‘n’ roll - London-born, self-educated and embracing many different styles. Recognised as one of the most iconic performers of the 20th Century, Bolan’s influence is as strong today as ever it was. His timeless hits are cornerstones in popular music: Ride A White Swan, Hot Love, Telegram Sam, Children of the Revolution, 20th Century Boy, and I Love To Boogie to name a few! In addition to being cited as a major influence by the likes of Johnny Marr and Mika, Bolan’s music has recently been covered by The Fratellis and Goldfrapp; featured in three major movies – Moulin Rouge, Jarhead and Billy Elliot and the smash hit television series Life on Mars as well as being featured in numerous high profile advertising campaigns.
The first single released by Marc Bolan after the shortening of the group’s name from Tyrannosaurus Rex to T.Rex charted for 20 weeks, peaking at number 2 in January 1971. Hot Love with b-sides King of the Mountain Cometh and Woodland Rock was released on 3rd September 2007. Hot Love was Number One for six weeks through March and April 1971. Get It On with b-side There Was A Time and Raw Ramp was released in July 1971 and spent a month at number 1 – Get It On also went Top 10 in the USA and throughout much of the world.
His commercial successes with T.Rex was huge: ten Top 10 hits in three years, three Number one UK LPs in 12 months, a best-selling poetry book, the box office smash hit film Born To Boogie (the film of the T.Rex phenomenon directed by Ringo Starr in 1972, which when released on DVD in 2005 and topped the UK music DVD charts), his own TV series... Perhaps less known is the breadth of his artistry and how he chopped and changed styles throughout his career, creating a style uniquely his own.
Marc Bolan wrote every one of this cannon of hits himself, working with legendary producer Tony Visconti to create a sound unique to T.Rex, with lyrics that invited the listener into Bolan’s vivid imagination, populated by Tolkienesque characters from mythical worlds. Having featured in the style bible “Town” as London’s Ace Face, aged just 14, Marc Bolan never left the house without having first perfected his hair and wardrobe. It was this attention to and fascination with style which manifested itself most memorably in T.Rex. Dressed in bespoke threads from Alkasura and Granny Takes A Trip, one appearance on BBC’s Top of the Pops to promote breakthrough hit Ride A White Swan was enough to unleash an army of imitators – both in other bands, and amongst T.Rex fans.
Whilst creating what became known as Glam Rock, Bolan quickly disassociated himself from it, claiming “Glam Rock is Dead!” as early as June 1973. He changed direction, moving to the US and embracing soul music 12 months before his friends and rivals, David Bowie and Elton John. Later, he was the only major star to align himself with the burgeoning UK Punk Rock explosion, inviting the Damned onto his 1977 Dandy In The Underworld Tour, and securing Generation X, The Jam and other New Wave bands for his TV show.
