The Fort Worth recording from July 18th is the best sounding recording from The Rolling Stones' legendary 1978 Some Girls tour. It was previously released on Handsome Girls on The Swingin' Pig (TSP-CD-200-4), Handsome Girls on Dandelion (DL 030/031/032/033) and reprinted on Out On Bail on Vinyl Gang (VGP-278), Cowgirl Barbeque, Gorgeous Girls Redux on Sister Morphine (Morph 024), and From Lakeland To Oakland (RED 006/007). Last year it was included on the excellent four disc set Handsome Girls: Definitive Version on Devil Productions. Now Halcyon has issued No Flash No Gimmicks. This label by the Empress Valley people has an impressive track record in improving already great tapes and this title isn't a disappointment. Last year's Devil Productions version was great, but this one is dramatically better. The stereo seperation sounds wider, louder, more clear and generally more lively. Balance between the vocals, instruments and audience is close to perfect and the music seems to leap out of the speakers and pummel the listener that is rare even for an official release much less an underground recording like this. The recording is so vivid and clear it is easy to see Mick dancing around and Keith slashing the strings on the guitar.
This concert is close to the end of the tour and the set list is set with no surprises."Satisfaction" and "Street Fighting Man" were played in some of the early shows but were dropped by then and the long crowd pleasers "Midnight Rambler" and "Sympathy For The Devil" were not played at all. The horn section and back up singers that accompanied the band in 1972 and 1975 are missing and the Stones are joined only by Ian Stewart and Ian MacLagan on various keyboards and pianos. Unlike previous tours where they were making social commentary and basked in the light of being cultural heros, this is the Stones as a rock and roll band playing intense music. As one person states, this is the Stones at their most slutty and sleazy. Others say this is the Stones at their most sloppy and drunk and was the reason for their more professional attitude when they toured three years later. Certainly some shows like the July 4th Buffalo concert were lackluster affairs. Since Fort Worth was being filmed and recorded they sound sober and deliver a blistering set. Seven of the ten songs on Some Girls constitutes the core of the set list (with "Some Girls", "Lies" and "Before They Make Me Run" being omitted). "Honky Tonk Women" has a reference to Dallas which pleases the audience. "Is there anybody in the balcony?" Mick asks before "When The Whip Comes Down".

The highlight of the first disc is "Miss You". It is curious that on this tour they played the 12" extended dance club version and the track last for eight and a half minutes with several instrumental interludes (but no harmonica). The Watts/Wyman rhythm section sounds like a pile driver as they pound the dance beat into the ground. In "Just My Imagination" Mick quips "we're gonna raise a family...ain't that cute?" Before an energetic version of "Respectable" Jagger says the now well known line "if the band is lacking in energy it is because they spent all night fucking...but we'll do our best." Doug Kershaw plays the fiddle on "Far Away Eyes" and his contribution is the only complaint one can have since he is buried far down in the mix and is hard to hear. Although this is a professional source lifted from the King Biscuit Flower Hour's DIR archives it is hard to say there are any bad versions. But No Flash No Gimmicks is such a dramatic improvement over previous releases it is hard to expect any improvements in the future. Like all other Halcyon releases the inserts are printed on very thick glossy paper with the star holograms implanted in the mix. The cover has the close up picture of Keith and a dramatic live shot in the inside. It can confidently be said that Halcyon have released the final word on the Fort Worth tape.

Angel - An Anthology.

"ANGEL: An Anthology" is a great compilation of songs that I would easily recommend to anyone who is not already familiar with Angel's albums. Those people could then decide whether this music is to their liking. People who already know this band's 5 original studio albums would be better served by both buying this and also trying to track down all 5 of those CDs, of which some of them are hard to find anymore. Like a lot of fans, "Tower" is one of my favorite Angel songs, with it's blistering intro and fiery delivery. This band covered a wide range of musical styles, and all are pretty well represented on this anthology. Plus, there are several songs here that aren't available on any of their previous releases. My favorite one of those would have to be their hard rock rendition of the Four Tops classic "Walk Away Renee", which I found mesmerizing and vastly interesting. Unlike some other fans, I really didn't have too much of a problem with this band's transition to mainstream rock in their later albums, although I must admit an overall disappointment that those later albums did not have the 'magnum opus' feel of the first two ("Angel" and "Helluva Band", my two personal favorites). Yes, their later albums were not as good as those, but they weren't all that bad either. Anyway, both the curious and the collector will find something worthwhile on this anthology. Recommended.

Words cannot describe -- cannot contain -- the performance captured on Live at the Star Club, Hamburg, an album that contains the very essence of rock & roll. When Jerry Lee Lewis performed the concert that became this album in the spring of 1964, his career was at its lowest point. Following his scandalous marriage to his teenage cousin, he was virtually blacklisted in the U.S., and by 1964 it had been six years since he had a real hit single, he was starting his recording career again with a new label, and, to make matters worse, America had fallen in love with the Beatles and the bands that followed in the British Invasion, leaving him exiled from the charts. Ironically, he wound up in the Beatles' old haunt of the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, in the spring of 1964, backed by the Nashville Teens, who still had yet to have a hit with "Tobacco Road" (which would scale the charts later that year). Lewis and the Nashville Teens had been touring throughout the group's native England for about a month, capped off by a stint at the Star Club, where the band played for two weeks, but was only joined by the Killer for one night, which was what was captured on this incendiary recording. Who knows why this was a night where everything exploded for Jerry Lee Lewis? It sounds like all of his rage at not being the accepted king of rock & roll surfaced that night, but that probably wasn't a conscious decision on his part -- maybe the stars were aligned right, or perhaps he just was in a particularly nasty mood. Or maybe this is the way he sounded on an average night in 1964.

In any case, Live at the Star Club is extraordinary -- the purest, hardest rock & roll ever committed to record. It starts with the Killer launching into "Mean Woman Blues" at a tempo far faster than the band is prepared for, and he never, ever lets go from that moment forward. He pounds the piano into submission, sings himself hoarse, berates the band ("What'd I Say, Pt. 2" has him yelling at a Nashville Teen to "play that thing right, boy!"), increases the tempo on each song, and joins in with the audience chanting his name. It's a crazed, unhinged performance, with the Nashville Teens running wild to follow his lead, and it's a great testament to the bandmembers that they nearly manage to keep up with him. One of the profound pleasures of this record is hearing the band try to run with Jerry Lee, which is exceeded only by the sheer dementia of the Killer's performance; he sounds possessed, hitting the keys so hard it sounds like they'll break, and rocking harder than anybody had before or since. Compared to this, thrash metal sounds tame, the Stooges sound constrained, hardcore punk seems neutered, and the Sex Pistols sound like wimps. Rock & roll is about the fire in the performance, and nothing sounds as fiery as this; nothing hits as hard or sounds as loud, either. It is no stretch to call this the greatest live album ever, nor is it a stretch to call it the greatest rock & roll album ever recorded. Even so, words can't describe the music here -- it truly has to be heard to be believed. [The Bear Family issue of Live at the Star Club includes one bonus track, a version of "Down the Line" that is marred by subpar fidelity, including Jerry Lee singing partially off mike -- it maintains the high quality of the rest of the record, but only fanatics need seek this edition out if they can easily obtain Rhino's domestic pressing.

Here we have the 1973 Stones compilation album No Stone Unturned. This is from a Russian bootleg I picked up a while ago. Very nice sound quality all the way around. It features 8 tracks that were released as B-Sides on UK singles back in the day and the other four were unreleased at the time. The bonus tracks come from mostly the same. This is a very nice little package. Hope you enjoy!

Chilliwack Albums 1971 - 1979.

Chilliwack are a Canadian rock band that had their heyday during the 1970s and 1980s. The band's lineup has changed numerous times, though Bill Henderson has constantly remained a fixture, and Chilliwack continues to tour across Canada.

The band initially formed as the Classics (1964) in Vancouver, British Columbia, but later changed the name to the Collectors (1966). Their psychedelic debut album yielded the minor hit "Lydia Purple". A second album was based on the musical score written by the band for a stage play by Canadian playwright George Ryga, Grass and Wild Strawberries.

Chilliwack effectively began with the departure of vocalist Howie Vickers from the Collectors in 1969; however, the band didn't change its name until 1970, to Chilliwack, a Salish term meaning "going back up" and the name of a city east of Vancouver in the Fraser River valley. With lead guitarist Bill Henderson now providing most of the vocals and doing most of the composing, the band released several records that were moderately successful in Canada. Hit singles in Canada included "Lonesome Mary", "Crazy Talk" and "Fly at Night". The album track "Rain-o", a blues-based composition that appeared in different versions on the Chilliwack debut album and the later "Dreams, Dreams, Dreams", was a well-known concert favourite.

In 1978, Brian MacLeod (guitar, drums, keyboards) and Ab Bryant (bass) joined the band. Chilliwack enjoyed its greatest commercial success with this new lineup.

Included here are a number of Chilliwack's earlier and (arguably) better albums before hitting commercial success in the 80's. Enjoy.

Pearl Harbour Show - Elvis Presley 1961.

One of the best early Elvis live performances ever released, albeit with a bad sound recording, but just listen to that crowd - magical! This is Elvis fresh from his demob from the US Army and right at the very start of a new era of music being fully supported by legends in their own right - The Jordanaires, Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana, Hank Garland, Boots Randolph, Bob Moore and Floyd Cramer. The setting for this show was Honolulu and the cause was a good one as it was a benefit performance in aid of the Pearl Harbour victims. It's great to hear live versions of 'All Shook Up', ''Reconsider Baby', 'One Night', 'It's Now Or Never' and a rarity in the form of 'Swing Down Sweet Chariot', from this particular time. EP would have been 74 today, 8th Jan - by no means an advanced age by today's standards.

Derek & The Dominoes - Complete Studio Sessions - 1970.

Passion, Brilliance, Perfection...What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said by most reviewers? This is a stone-cold, front-to-back masterpiece, easily in my Top 10 Desert Island Discs. Combining Clapton and Duane Allman, both at the absolute peak of their abilities and teaming them with a phenomenally tight and soulful group of musicians produced this staple of classic rock.

Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to write and collect an embroiling and interconnected song cycle. Meanwhile, latecomer Duane Allman prodded Clapton to tear it up on guitar, so as not to be overwhelmed by his even more talented foil. Of course, Clapton eventually won the hand of his lady love. And then he divorced her. Sometimes real life messes up a good plot line.

Rolling Stone Magazine has devoted a whole issue to the 500 best albums of all time. I was stunned that this album did not appear at least in the top 10. It drives me to drink that there are millions of rock fans out there who don't even know this music exists.

This particular collection gives us a glimpse into the recording sessions for this landmark album. Hear Layla like you've never experienced it before.

Suzi Quatro is an American singer/songwriter/bass guitarist who came onto the music scene with a string of hits in the mid-1970s. Dressed in leather outfits and playing a bass guitar that all but dwarfed her, she was really one of the very first women to break the mould and play hard and driving rock and roll. Although not that well known in her native America (most of her albums were recorded in England), she has still been quoted as an inspiration to many of those who came after her including such people as Joan Jett.
In addition to her (for the times) pretty outragous stage persona, she also frequently choose to cover songs from male artists without changing the lyrics, thus giving lesbian overtones to the performance. Amongst the songs she covered were All Shook Up, I Wanna Be Your Man, and Wake Up Little Susie. Her musical range was very considerable from heavy rockers like 48 Crash, I've Never Been In Love Before, and Daytona Demon, to songs with an agressive feminist message like Can The Can and Much Wiser Than You, to power ballads such as The Race Is On and The Main Attraction.

Her success continued through the 1970s with an almost constant stream of hits, but by the 1980s the success seemed harder to come by and she started working on other projects including an acting carear. She appeared in several episodes of "Happy Days" as guitar singer Leather Tuscadero.

In more recent years, she has gone back to recording albums although as yet none of them seem to have achieved chart success. It's a great pity since in so many ways, she showed the world that women could do rock 'n' roll just as well as men and her music still has a drive and message that has so much to say.

Shock Treatment - The Edgar Winter Group - 1974.

I was fourteen years old when this record came out. A couple of years earlier someone had turned me onto They Only Come Out at Night and I was hooked. Someone else had Roadwork and I finally got around to White Trash as well. By then I was buying them all; Jasmine Nightdreams and everything else I could get my hands on. I played the living bleep out of this record in my parents living room. I remember being into Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo and Teenage Love Affair via Rick Derringer, but for some reason this record got no radio love at all.

What this is is an amazing collection of catchy, mid 70's pop tunes, played by a whip-smart band that plays and sings it's collective butt off. If you've followed Edgar Winter's career at all, you know that he achieved his first peak playing incredible down n' dirty R&B with White Trash.

Many of the White Trash fans were disappointed, then, when he formed the Edgar Winter Group with now-deceased, underrated pop-genius Dan Hartman, drummer Chuck Ruff and guitar chopmeister Ronnie Montrose. "They Only Come Out at Night," their first release, is a great album of hook-heavy pop songs (remember "Free Ride"?) as well as my vote for greatest pop instrumental of all time, "Frankenstein." Thus began phase two of EW's career: as a pop craftsman, creating wonderful 3 minute gems rather than extended R&B jams.

This album represents, I think, the peak of that period. Ronnie Montrose left and was replaced by Rick Derringer, a guitarist even more well-suited to the band's mission of crafting "stick-in-your-head" hooks. As on the mid-period Beatles' albums, each song is different from the one before and the one after, and each song, listened to individually, will leave you humming for days. Unfortunately, "Shock Treatment" didn't spawn a hit, though literally any song on the album could've (and should've) been a hit single. Years later, David Lee Roth had a minor hit with a version of "Easy Street," but he certainly didn't improve on the original.

Though the band's self-titled third album had some great moments ("Diamond Eyes" is one of the coolest soul ballads ever written), the group never again approached the consistency and punch of this record. If you're at all interested in 70's pop music (fans of Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder, Wings, Elton John and the Doobie Bros. take note), this album is a must-have.

Suzi Quatro has a long and successful run of Top 10 hits in the U.K., and one big hit in America (1979’s “Stumblin’ In”), but despite her musical ability on bass and her edgy vocals, Quatro was never able to become a household name in her native United States.

Emerging from the Detroit music scene in the 1960s with one of the early all-girl garage bands, the Pleasure Seekers (later renamed Cradle), Quatro caught the attention of famed U.K. music producer Mickey Most, who had scored countless hits in the studio with the Animals, the Yardbirds, Lulu, Donovan, Herman’s Hermits and others. Most was recording an early Jeff Beck solo album in America and caught Quatro with Cradle at a Detroit nightclub. An offer was extended to only her, and when Cradle split up the next year, she took Most up on his offer.

The first single they recorded went nowhere, so Most brought in up-and-coming hard-pop writers, Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. The first song they gave Quatro, a hard rock pop gem entitled “Can the Can” went straight to the top of the U.K. charts. The team of Quatro, Chinn and Chapman would go on to score another ten hits in the U.K. over the next decade. Following her U.K. success, she signed a deal in the U.S., but her success would be limited mainly because radio programmers and audiences still weren’t ready for a leather-clad, angry female bass player/singer. Several attempts were made to expose her to the states; they tried and failed. This Record Plant live radio broadcast from 1975 was one of those attempts.

It would not be until the late ‘70s that Quatro hit her commercial stride in the states, when she landed a cameo as a leather-clad ‘50s female rocker named Leather Tuscadero on the popular TV sitcom, Happy Days. Quatro did such a good job on the show, they made her character a semi-regular, and she appeared on the show several more times as a love interest of Henry Winkler’s character, the Fonz. The U.S. hit “Stumblin’ In” followed in 1979, but because it was a duet with an unknown vocalist named Chris Norman, it did little to break her own career. Quatro pulled out of the music business for a few years and kept a low profile through the ‘80s and ‘90s.

This recording features her band doing mostly material written by Chapman and Chinn, in addition to newer material written by members of her band, and a few choice covers such as “All Shook Up”(a complete rock makeover of this classic Elvis Presley track), as well as her take of Johnny and the Pirates’ “Shakin’ All Over” (which was also recorded by the Who.) Other highlights include energetic live versions of: “Your Mama Won’t Like Me,” “You Can Make Me Want You, But You Can’t Make Me Love You” and “Glycerin Queen.”
