NATURAL GAS (Joey Molland) from the mastertape 1976. Repost!

This is the 1976 album by Natural Gas. They were a rock band featuring Joey Molland (Badfinger), Peter Wood, Mark Clarke (Uriah Heep) and Jerry Shirley (Humble Pie). They released one album, Natural Gas, produced by Felix Pappalardi, in 1976. This has never been reissued on CD.

The band released their self titled LP on Private Stock Records in 1976, and enjoyed a successful tour with Peter Frampton the following year. According to Molland, a general lack of organization led to the band's demise late in 1977.[2]


The album tracks were taken from the boot CD Badfinger 1976. I did a little further EQ work on them and Little Darlin' had a tape wrinkle in the intro and minor tape drop-out. I did my best to compensate for those with Audacity. I added the cleanest vinyl rip I have found of the same song, though you can't beat the overall clarity and fidelity of the mastertape. I'd still like to clean up the fade-out further so I could tweak the whole high end a little.

There are three bonus tracks (plus the vinyl rip), two demos produced by Mal Evans and a rehearsal.

I don't know how far from the stage this was recorded, but there is a good deal of
distortion evident on the vocals at times; remember that this gig was in the Guinness
book for many years as being the loudest ever. The taper sat about two thirds of the way across the pitch, just outside the 18 yard box (football term) and to stage right.

On this recording, the crowd nearby the taper can be heard clearly, but to my mind do not detract from the music, I think they even add to the atmosphere of having been a part of that self same crowd.

TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
There's no denying it, this has to be of the best audience recordings available from the '75 By Numbers tour in terms of sound quality and performance. Even Toronto '75 cannot boast the vocal clarity on this one. The Who were on fire for a lot of these performances, evidenced by the fine audience recordings from this era.
I chose to apply some edits to this recording in an effort to improve on the already stellar sound quality. These edits amount to little more than specific frequency adjustments wherein some low-mid range noise existed, causing that boomy muffled sound typical to audience recordings and properly balancing of the overall recording level. The second disc is of slightly better sound quality. That is how I received the source discs. If there is a better quality version in circulation, I'd certainly welcome it! Regardless, this one sounds great to my ears . I have included new artwork to go along with this remaster. For those who have never heard this show, sit back and prepare for the full aural assualt that was The Who running on all cylinders in the mid-seventies! Enjoy!

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour "Live in Gdansk" Will Be Released Theatrically...Check Movie Trailer

David Gilmour, the voice and guitar of Pink Floyd, played a live concert to 50,000 people against the historical backdrop of the Gdansk , Poland shipyards , and now audiences can thrill to it in digital cinema equipped theatres around the country for one night only on Monday September 22nd. This one time only special theatrical event, brought to audiences by The Bigger Picture, an AccessIT company and AEG/Network Live includes 5 songs not available on the concert DVD: ‘Speak To Me’, ‘Breathe (In the Air)’, ‘Time’, ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ plus a reprise of ‘Breathe (in The Air’).

The theatrical release of David Gilmour Live In Gdańsk will be dedicated to the memory of the late Richard Wright, who appears in the film. Richard Wright, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, passed away on Monday, September 15th after a short illness.

David Gilmour writes, “No one can replace Richard Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend. He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound.”

Remembering Richard Wright

I was a teenager once, which means that I owned the biggest album of 1973 -- Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon. I first got hooked as a wet-behind-the-ears high-school freshman when my best friend dubbed it for me on cassette, then bought the vinyl and finally embracing my addiction to their gravity-defying psychedelic rock. I soon graduated to 1975's Wish You Were Here and 1979's The Wall. Dark Side of The Moon went on to sell over 40 million copies and spend 14 years -- years -- on the Billboard 200album chart!

Later, in college, when trying to impress the gatekeepers at my school's radio station, I whiled away hours decoding 1969's sticky, experimental Ummagumma. Had I logged as many hours studying for my finals or dumbly plucking away at the Pentatonic scale on my friend's electric guitar, it's possible I'd be an entirely different person today. A slight exaggeration, maybe, but it's hard to overestimate the influence the titans of U.K. space rock have had on my life, and the music that so frequently guides it.

Richard Wright, who died today at 65 after a battle with cancer, was a founding member and keyboardist for Pink Floyd. While not as famous in his own right as the late guitarist-vocalist Syd Barrett and guitarist-vocalist Dave Gilmour, he was instrumental in the development of the iconic Floyd sound -- the anthemic organ swells, the layered synth riffs. He wrote a few of their big hits, including Dark Side's "The Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us And Them," and worked on songs such as "Atom Heart Mother," "Echoes" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Roger Waters famously fired Wright during the recording of The Wall, and Wright was relegated to session-musician status for years, during which he released two solo albums, Wet Dream, in 1978, and Broken China, in 1996. But even from the sidelines, Wright devoted most of his musical life to Pink Floyd.

Chances are good that you or your friends experienced some sort of Pink Floyd phase when you were younger. I hope so. All I will add is, thanks for helping open those doors, Richard. And hope to see you one day at that great gig in the sky.

Pete Townshend - The Lifehouse Demos Parts 1 and 2 - 1970

The Lifehouse Demos might have been recognized as the greatest solo album ever made... if Pete Townshend had released these performances when he secretly recorded them in 1970. Forget the eventually abandoned Lifehouse project's reputation as an unfinished “failure” and resist your natural temptation to compare these tapes to heroic Who recordings, and you'll discover a stunning, fully realized, tour de force brimming with so much creativity, so much energy... so many guitars, that landmark self-made LPs from contemporaries like Rundgren or McCartney simply pale by comparison.

Fully arranged and recorded by Pete at his inspirational zenith, these recordings are breathtaking. Forget about the Lifehouse "concept," it's Townshend's multi-faceted performances that are revelatory. In Daltry's hands these songs became anthems, in Townshend's they become emotional anthems. His rudimentary drumming (like Todd’s & Paul’s) is Ringo-simple as he layers multiple guitars, vocals, keyboards and his groundbreaking "Baba O'Riley" sequencer work into an unheralded pop masterwork. This music should be as historically revered as Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, also from 1970. Instead, these tapes just exist... largely unheard. That the 25 year old Townshend recorded all this in 1970, by himself, immediately following Tommy, just boggles the mind.

The 2000 6-CD box set, Lifehouse Chronicles, is well worth the Sterling if you enjoy dissecting Pete's details. It's bursting with unused & rearranged material, string sessions, new re-mixes and a 2-CD live radio play. The first two CDs, however, are these sacred songs and glorious demos... “Pure And Easy,” “Bargain,” “Goin’ Mobile," an endless array of now iconic material. It’s rare when you can pinpoint the very pinnacle of a great artist. For Townshend, this moment in time is untouchable. Maybe, by anyone.

Yes, tomorrow, it's school. So, if you'll excuse me, I'll take a minute here and practice one of my favorite head games:

Student: "I'm not going to do it."
Me: "Okay."
Student: "Fine."

Student: "What happens if I don't do it?"
Me: "That's up to you."
Student:"You're the one who grades me."
Me: "I didn't say I wouldn't grade you, I just can't tell you what will happen to you if you don't do it."
Student: "What?"
Me: "Beg your pardon?"
Student:"So, if I don't do it, you'll fail me."
Me: "Absolutely."
Student: "But it's a stupid assignment!!!!"
Me: "Okay."
Student: "So why should I have to do it????"
Me: "You don't."
Student: "But you'll fail me."
Me: "Only if you don't do it."
Student: "You suck. Why can't you be fair?"
Me: "I don't know what you want from me. If you don't want to do it, then don't. It's up to you. I have no control over any of this."
Student: "But you're the one giving me this assignment."
Me: "Define give."
Student: "What?"
Me: "Well, if you say so."
Student: "Wait. What????!!"
Me: "How's everyone doing class, any questions???"


I can already see I'll be taking my blood pressure medication before the end of the month.

First of six sold out nights at the Forum, and a great show. The Song Remains The Same, Sick Again, Kashmir and Achilles Last Stand are devastating and No Quarter is just the greatest version ever heard! John Bonham was introduced by Plant as "...the man who fought food poisoning and drunk Heineken...". A great show and not merely an opening night, but a great show in its own right. It also comes from the best audience recording ever! In fact the Millard tape sound so great Jimmy used the fragment on the official DVD!


News report: LED ZEPPELIN OPEN RECORD RUN AT THE FORUM

Led Zeppelin painted a mural of musical abstractions for 18,000 screaming fans, who buried the first five minutes of the show in continuous applause.

Zeppelin, acknowledged as the world's hottest rock group, finally made it to the Inglewood Forum Tuesday night in the most touted Southland concert since the Rolling Stones. They opened a six-concert stand and will play to 108,000 people - a Forum record.

The British quartet liberally dipped an artistic paint brush into a tasty serving of music which spanned the group's 10-year history. The sight of lead singer Robert Plant, his body absorbing the driving tempo of John Bonham's drum rhythms, brought the crowd to its feet. Plant clearly has made it back after a near-fatal automobile accident which almost ended his career and forced the group into a two-year layoff. He strutted around the stage, blond mane shaking; in crazy tempos, hand on hip and bristling with energy.

They opened with "The Song Remains the Same," the title cut from their latest album for Swan Song. At one point, Plant threw back his head, thrust the microphone against his mouth and yelled. "We finally made it. Last time we were here (the Forum) we played with Bad Company. Tonight — no beating around the bush, we're gonna play 'cause that's what we're here for." And that's exactly what they did for a marathon three-hour set.

Lead guitarist Jimmy Page sizzled. He moved as if he were a puppet on a string, egging the audience on as he wound around the stage like a rubber snake held up by strings. The versatile Page was bathed in laser lights during a rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner," a la Jimi Hendrix, but with the staccato phrasing that typifies the Zeppelin style.

Earlier, Page displayed his musical flexibility by playing mandolin in an acoustic portion of the show which saw John Paul Jones etch out some interesting work on a three-neck guitar. Jones, opening on bass, was cool and unassuming, but got down to fast action for a portion of his keyboard solo.

It took a mere 40 minutes to sell out the tickets for five nights at the Forum. Another night was added later. It too sold out within minutes. (The Telegram - June 1977)

A really erratic night, especially from Jimmy. He totally botches The Song Remains The Same, and then delivers some excellent playing on Sick Again, Since I've Been Loving You, and No Quarter. Achilles Last Stand is rushed and Jimmy almost forgets the solo, throwing everyone's timing off. How they recover is quite exciting though! The Stairway To Heaven solo from him is exquisite. All in all, the most erratic LA show, probably the worst one out of the six nights but still a very good show. The rest of the band seems fine.

An excellent show ... a famous Badge Holders show due to Plant's several dedications to the badge holder people ... with the whole band firing on all cylinders! It is the only known show from 1977 tour when the band stopped after the first song. The peculiar stop is brief and Robert doesn't offer any hints. Perhaps a guitar change was neccessary. Jimmy's soloing during Since I've Been Loving You, Achilles Last Stand, and Ten Years Gone in particular, is amazing. Keith Moon joins in to make this already classic show legendary in stature. Just listen for a very crazed sounding yelling over the beginning of Bonham's drum solo: "The best rock and roll drummer in the world ... living today! Mr John Bonham! With Buddy Rich's arms!" He says more after that, but I can never quite make out just what it is because he seems to trail off into a noise of swearing and yelling, which conjures up cartoon images of the Tazmanian Devil or even (perhaps more appropriately) Animal from the Muppets. But that's Keith Moon for you! He also appeared before the encores. "LA. It's been very funny. Good night!" and the show was over.

What an incredible show, and Jimmy in particular is playing some of the best guitar of the tour! The entire band is in a no nonsense mood, playing the best they can. No Quarter and Ten Years Gone are beautiful and Achilles Last Stand and Stairway To Heaven are exquisite. Jimmy's solo in Trampled Underfoot is one of the best he's ever done on that song and the funky Communication Breakdown encore caps what is probably one the best of the six LA Forum shows.

Another amazing show from this run! The playing and singing are top notch and everything is concentrated on the music. No Quarter is amazing with great improvisations and the acoustic section is long and spontaneous, with That's Alright Mama being dropped in complete with a slide guitar solo! Jimmy's solo is great and long, with several unusual sections that sound exciting and build the tension before Achilles Last Stand blows it all apart. A great solo and jam section in Stairway To Heaven and a rocking and excellent encore of It'll Be Me close one of the best 1977 shows ever.

An endless epic concert closes out the six night stand at the Forum, and Led Zeppelin start off slow but by the middle they reach a great height, although they do seem to be a little tired at the end. The 40 minute No Quarter contains some great improvisation and Ten Years Gone is really epic. A wild and spontaneous acoustic section is the centerpiece of this show and a riotous and funky Trampled Underfoot is a welcome addition to the concert. Jimmy solo is nearly 30 minutes long and is fairly enjoyable, although his tuning in the middle helps give the impression that it is rather wandering, and Achilles Last Stand is sloppier than most versions. A great end to the saga though!

The Left Banke - Two Compilations.

Please read this carefully : I made the "And Finally...It's The Left Banke" collection from the two Bam Caruso vinyl albums - And Suddenly (Bam Caruso KIRI 021 - 1982) & Walk Away Renee (Bam Caruso PABL 056 - 1985) - it means i do not have the Bam Caruso CD edition (i have to say i've never seen a proper copy of the CD, so if anybody has one, contact me). So the artwork has been made from the 1982 Bam Caruso LP, it has also been slightly revamped fitting in the complete track listing and updating the title. Below are some very acute notes found somewhere and written by an unknown fan.

"The Left Banke's catalog is entirely out of print, and both the impossibly rare "And Finally" disc (comprising the original stereo mix of the first album, along with the second album and rarities) and the not-impossibly-rare "There's Gonna Be a Storm disc" (same concept, only with a remix of the first album) are going for ridiculous prices on eBay or Amazon. Paying these ridiculous prices benefits nobody but the seller - Mercury ain't seeing a dime, the band ain't seeing a dime - so why not get the material for free until the inevitable reissue comes along? The Left Banke's first album, "Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina," (as featured on "And Finally...") is the original stereo mix which reflects the mixed origins of the original album, and ranges from wide stereo ("I've Got Something On My Mind") to might-as-well-be-mono ("Barterers And Their Wives"). Somewhat peculiarly, it appears as if no mono mix of the album was prepared, allegedly per a Mercury experiment to "single-format" its releases. Most copies that are marked "mono" are actually stereo records; while "real" mono copies do exist, they are fold-downs, and apart from a weird, mis-spliced version of the "Shadows" intro are little more than curios. The Banke's mainstream debut on CD, "There's Gonna Be a Storm: The Complete Recordings," was in print from 1992 to around 2003, and managed to shoot up in value the instant it went out of print. Huh? Anyway, compilers Bill Inglot and Andrew Sandoval elected to remix the entire first album for its inclusion on "Storm." In some cases, they attempted to replicate the original mono singles mixes, only in stereo ("Renee"); in other cases, they preferred near-mono mixes; and in at least one case, they produced an actual mono mix ("Shadows"). These were the versions most easily available to Banke fans in the CD era."

Very rare Euro bootleg LP. This record will cost you up to $40.00 on Ebay plus airmail postage from the EU (if you can find it).

Most all of Side 1 is previously released and included on the Have You Got It Yet? 1.0 version. Much of Side 2 is previously unreleased and unheard material from the David Bowie sponsored 1973 sessions. No lead guitar or vocal tracks were ever recorded for these sessions. Two versions of the Kevin Ayers song are on this release. For you Puritans, the second version is the one that is actually on the LP, but due to misidentification on the original Kevin Ayers CD, it is not the version of the song that actually has Syd. Although it sounds better, it only has Kevin Ayers sounding very Syd-like. For you Syd fans, the FIRST version of the song on this torrent is the one believed by Laughing Madcaps cognoscenti to have Syd-- you can hear him mixed down in the right channel.

George Shearing Quintet - White Satin (1960) / Black Satin (1956)

George Shearing entertained countless people in the twentieth century with his excellent piano playing; his blindness never discouraged him. Not only is he a hero for enriching our lives with his fine work; his artistry provides an excellent example for younger emerging artists to study so that they can better themselves.

The CD is a "two-fer" CD; this means that we get all the tracks from two of George Shearing's record albums: Black Satin and White Satin. Awesome!

The CD track set begins with the ten tracks from Black Satin. "The Folks Who Live On The Hill" gives us a perfect beginning to the CD. The lush musical arrangement sounds so smooth; this is easy music at its very best with an emphasis on George's piano playing. The arrangement makes good use of the strings and percussion to evoke a pensive yet soothing mood for "The Folks Who Live On The Hill."

"If I Should Lose You" continues in the same vein only now we hear a Latin beat added to the overall arrangement. The piano gets more of the spotlight, too. Grab your sweetheart, jump up and start dancing--this is the perfect music to dance to! "Black Satin" oozes sophistication with yet another classic ballad being molded to fit within the Latin rhythms of the day. Excellent! The strings enhance the quality of "Black Satin," too. "Nothing Ever Changes My Love" uses many of the same techniques employed by the song "Black Satin." Roll up the rug and start dancing, folks! That Latin beat with its trademark percussion from the late 1950s and the early 1960s always moves me. These arrangements by Billy May and George Shearing shine like gold.

"Moon Song" begins with a dramatic flourish by the strings; and George Shearing comes in with a beautiful piano arrangement for "Moon Song." "Moon Song" is remarkably romantic, pensive and sensitive all at once. George's flawless piano playing during the middle of this number showcases his talent. What a lush arrangement overall, too. The CD track set for the record album entitled Black Satin ends with the upbeat, bouncy and somewhat spicy medley of "As Long As I Live/Let's Live Again." What a joyous tune for the ending of this set! The strings complement George Shearing's piano playing to perfection; and I like how they use the drums.

We then get all the numbers from another George Shearing album entitled White Satin. White Satin literally bursts at the seams with romantic numbers; and the beginning track entitled "Your Name Is Love" sets this tone right away. The flutes are well used in this arrangement as Billy May conducts the number. "Dream," a well known classic love ballad, gets the royal treatment by Shearing, May and the rest of the crew. They perform "Dream" with passion and style. George's piano playing is nicely showcased in "Dream," too. Great! The ballad "Laura" comes from the movie of the same name; and you won't need any lyrics to this number to experience the thoughtful and somewhat melancholy mood of this number. George's piano runs parallel to the percussion; this creates a lush, romantic effect that makes "Laura" an instant highlight of this album.

"How Long Has This Been Going On" starts with a great horn introduction; and when the band and George on piano come in the full romantic effect of this instrumental ballad really shines. This is easy listening music that even royalty couldn't resist! They also slow down the usual tempo just a bit to embellish this great number. "Love's Melody" relies on the strings and the piano to carry the bulk of the melody; and this works well.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. "I'll Take Romance" ends the CD--and the second record album entitled White Satin--with a distinctly upbeat tone that leaves you wanting more. The infectiously catchy melody makes good use of the piano as the strings and percussion enhance the number. "I'll Take Romance" works on several levels at once; and therefore this number makes for a strong ending to this CD.

The liner notes give you the song credits and chart debut dates for the record albums Black Satin and White Satin. I would have liked an essay but this is a minor disappointment.

George Shearing's remarkable talent glistens on every single track on this fine CD; and he will remain a force in the entertainment world for quite some while to come. I recommend this CD for fans of George Shearing; and people who enjoy easy listening with an occasional Latin beat thrown in will always enjoy this CD.

Johnny Rivers - Rewind / Realization - Johnny Rivers

No one has ever created better covers of other artist's songs more consistently than sixties superstar Johnny Rivers, and here in this double re-release of two of his best 1960s work, "Rewind/Realization" are found some of the finest cover efforts he has ever made. From "Baby, I Need Your Loving" to "The Tracks Of My Tears", from "Positively Fourth Street" to "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", Johnny turns in a truly stellar performance here. Several of my favorites, though, are works written by other artists but originally recorded and released by Rivers, such as the smash hit "Summer Rain", "Something Strange", and "Look To Your Soul", all written by James Hendricks (not Jimi Hendrix). All of these wonderful songs carry the signature Johnny Rivers vocal style and are also beautifully arranged and accompanied.

Also excellent are "What's the Difference?", a sixties counter-cultural anthem by Scott MacKenzie (of "San Francisco" fame) and a pair of relatively rare Johnny Rivers compositions, "The Way We Live", and "Going Back To Big Sur". I also like the treatment Rivers uses to cover "For Emily , Wherever I May Find Her", and for "It'll Never Happen Again". Few other sixties artists were as bold or as forthright about delivering stirring and accomplished covers of other artists work, and Rivers has long been under-appreciated as a master for delivering blue-eyed soul with conviction and believability. He is also a consummate professional, and I am glad to see this new compilation which makes the material on these two great albums available again.
