Little Steven's Underground Radio Presents Christmas a Go Go!

The buzz: Little Steven Van Zandt is best known as a sidekick to Bruce Springsteen and Tony Soprano, but he’s the center of attention on the popular radio show “Little Steven’s Underground Garage.” This “Christmas A Go-Go” compilation shows off Van Zandt's taste as a curator, featuring rare tracks from Keith Richards, Bob Seger and Soupy Sales—along with holiday chestnuts from the Ramones, Brian Setzer and, um, Joe Pesci.

The verdict: Van Zandt’s solid, if limited, taste (he likes that old time rock 'n' roll) creates a cohesive collection with numerous highlights for listeners seeking some volume in their Christmas catalog. The best tracks avoid novelty (sorry, Mr. Pesci) and skirt rehashing standard fare; on the flip side, Tina Sugandh’s “White Christmas” sounds anonymous, and “Silent Night” never needed to be set to the tune of “Norwegian Wood.” As a whole, these rockers are more inspired by Santa than Jesus, leading to the Kinks’ cheerfully punked up “Father Christmas,” the bawdy swagger of Clarence Carter’s “Back Door Santa” and Seger’s “Sock It to Me Santa,” in which he enthusiastically lives out his fantasy of being James Brown. The Chevelles channel the Stones in their shout-out to Santa, while real Stone Richards recalls Chuck Berry (per usual) with his rambunctious “Run Rudolph Run,” setting the tone for “Christmas A Go-Go” right from the start.

My Take: This may be the coolest Xmas CD ever made (or maybe 2nd greatest, as Little Steven says on the cover wrap). From the craziness of Joe Pesci and Soupy Sales (they sing, folks) to the raunchiness of Clarence Carter's "Back Door Santa" to the tear-it-up of Keith Richards and The Kinks, this one smokes like a yule log. I put this on while preparing for a Christmas party and found myself dancing around while mopping the floors. It it can make mopping fun, it can make your holidays fun. Maybe you won't even need the Xanax this year! Get it.

Christmas Cool Yule - 2008

Hey, all! Well, we finally finished putting together the old Christmas compilation for this year. I was going to let iTunes randomly pick the songs for me, but I was never happy with the choices so I decided to just go through all my Christmas songs and hand-pick the choice cuts. This is a little different from the usual fare - I think it has more less-traditional Christmas and holiday songs. Some of them you've met, some of them you're meeting for the first time. We'll leave these sweet treats up through the season and then, like our fake silver tree, they'll fold up and return to the attic with all the other shiny bric-a-brac.

The Sinatra Family Wish You A Merry Christmas - 1968.

Here's a real treasure that I found at Saveco years ago in Edmonton - and I didn't get it from the bargain bin! I didn't even know about this album, so you can imagine my surprise when I found it and for so cheap ($3.98). Does anyone know if there's any other record that Frank and his kids recorded together? Well, I think it's just dandy that we get to hear Tina and Frank Jr. each sing a song on this. Nancy was already recording hit records, so she gets two solo songs on this album, plus a duet with Tina. But my favorites are the songs where Frank Sr. and the kids all sing together. I especially like their version of "The 12 Days of Christmas".

So, better hurry and download this one before it goes away!

- Boston, MA - Nov.6.1978 -

This is one of my favorite Boston boots from years past. It's Boston in their prime and in their home town! The crowd was rowdy and the band fed off of that. Tom Scholz even instructed the crowd to ignore the rules and stand on their seats if they wanted to.

This recording was widely traded for years on cassette, and eventually released on a bootleg CD called "Party to Boston". But finding a good audio source proved difficult. I finally obtained a 2nd gen cassette tape which sounds way better than any tape of this show I had heard previously... and sounds *much* better than "Party to Boston" (which is even missing a song).

No work has been done to the audio other than transfer and normalization. Personally, I think it sounds great just as it is. But this is a good reference copy to work from if anybody feels bold enough to try their hand at it.

I reworked the artwork from "Party to Boston" to fit this boot. Everything is exactly as it was except for the back. It now reflects two CDs and lists the missing song "Television Politician". I also added a slight drop shadow on the text for readability. The artwork is 200dpi.
