Americathon OST - Various - 1979

This is the soundtrack to the film of the same name which I first saw at a drive-in theatre when it first came out in 1979. I remember the film itself was kind of loopy but the music really rocked. At The time of its release, this original motion picture soundtrack was worthy 'cause of the Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello songs, but also noteworthy was one Eddie Money song ("Get A Move On") co-written with Paul Collins, featuring Paul (guitar & vocals) and produced by Bruce Botnick.

This outrageous farce (based on a play by Firesign Theatre alumni Philip Proctor and Peter Bergman) features cameos from Elvis Costello, Jay Leno, Meat Loaf and the Del Rubio Triplets, and is narrated by George Carlin. The Beach Boys contribute to the musical soundtrack.

The Doors Live in Detroit at Cobo Hall - 1970 - Repost.

Short but sweet: I don't want to ruin it for you... this is the ONE... there is no other DOORS CD like this one. Now if you're a casual fan a hits collection is what you want, but if you've "felt" the Doors in your bones you need this. The stereo mix is superb, it's on par with any of the studio albums. Morrison has his rock n' roll GOD hat on and keeps the poetry reading to a minimum. The band slams away like an acid-rock version of Impulse! era Coltrane. The liner notes claim that this show was the longest Doors gig ever, the encore was over an hour long... every second is on these two CDs. Breathtaking. This is not the Rock n' Roll hall of fame 'touch me' bubblegummy Doors, this is the evil, MC-5, Stooges, Hendrix, acid-bent dirge Doors. This is the kind of thing you get and loan to that one friend you have that truly "gets it" and you say "man, you're not gonna believe this..." Really, truly, honest injun... if you dig the Doors you really gotta get this. Package, liner notes, sound, it's all 5 star material. Even if you're not a Doors fan, say you're simply a fan of experimental or psychedelic music, and you happen to be reading this... get this, there are some extended organ-guitar battles that will blow your mind wide open!

I got this in trade with a fellow subscriber of the old Brain Damage Magazine back in 1995. This has a completely different sound then what you are used to. There are some different lyrics and you can hear instruments and sounds in this mix used throughout the recording that were buried in the official release. This is a true gem.

"Pink Floyd's The Wall (1979) stand as one of Pink Floyd's greatest achievements, as well as one of one of the greatest achievements in rock music and live concert production. The album spawned a tour, a film, a book of the film (not quite collectible), and eventually an all-star revival concert in Berlin, and finally in 1999 a double live album.

But before The Wall was a film, a concert, or even an album, The Wall was just an idea... an idea under construction. The Wall went through at least two "demo" stages. The first was a crude recording of Roger Waters strumming his guitar and singing alone. Presented by Waters at the same time as another concept called The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, Waters' first demo--still uncirculated today-- was deemed unlistenable by the rest of the band, but they felt it had potential. The Hitchhiking demo was set aside, but The Wall was developed further.

Many writing session later, Pink Floyd--probably with assistance from Bob Ezrin--recorded a second, more complete demo. The lyrics were not polished, and neither was the music. Thankfully, lyrics like "I am a physician/who can handle your condition/like a magician" would be entirely discarded and rewritten before the songs were finally committed to tape in a studio. But the rough lyrics and the risky musical experiments which appeared in that second demo had finally made it to the public.

These demo tapes have circulated among just a very few collectors since about 1999. Now it is available for all fans. This recording presents the entire 'work in progress' in the best sonic quality available on CD."

Two songs at the end of CD 2 are filler songs that came on the tape. The first two songs are from an unknown live Roger Waters concert. What I find interesting is that WYWH is a very quiet relaxed version without drums for the most part of the first half of the song. Nice version. Following is Brain Damage/Eclipse from the same live unknown concert date. A VERY bluesy version of Eclipse in which Roger actually asks the audience to sign along during the middle of the song. It then turns into more of a Hard Rock song in the end. Easily my favorite version of the song.

Here it is, the infamous Meddled ROIO, feverishly sought after by Floyd fans wanting to hear what Meddler was supposed to sound like before being mistakenly edited to mono.It came from an FM broadcast over the BBC in England. The stereo dimension adds so much to the recording, you can actually hear very distinctly what each band member is doing. This ROIO is just an incredible listen from start to finish. The sound is amazing as is the performance of the Floyd. Fat Old Sun never sounded better. It is important to note, Embryo and Blues came from a different original source I believe. The penultimate show of 1972, featuring a great audience and a note-perfect four-man Floyd. This is Man Of Leisure Music's new revision of the Zurich show... a very significant improvement, especially with that all-important encore of Childhood's End. Haven't compared it to the "2nd source", which apparently has more tune-ups before Dark Side, but it doesn't get much better than this as far as sound quality is concerned.

Starts off with a REALLY tight Dark Side set, the Travel Sequence is quite stunning. Rick's and Roger's vocals are stronger than usual, making this a particularly enjoyable performance. Any Colour You Like sounds a bit hesitant and there are a few very minor tape problems here and there but other than that, it's an excellent first half. Nothing like hearing the four of them nail a performance of DSOTM.

Now, the second disc... MINDBLOWING. The audience instantly recognizes One of These Days from the wind effects and they're treated to a downright blazing rendition. Some nice stuff going on during Careful With That Axe Eugene. As I said, Roger was having an "on" night so this is quite the spectacle... there's even some Pict-ish ranting! Echoes is fantastic, as always. Everything comes through clear. The piano part is a bit more freeform than usual, and Nick takes some liberties with his drum fills as well. The transitions are excellent, and the ending is pretty orgasmic. Not as much as the next song though... a very special Childhood's End. Need more be said?

This is speed-corrected and de-hissed, with some boosting having been done to the upper sound range. This is a complete concert, and includes 'Childhood's End', which is missing from other versions of this great concert. The newly fixed up track of 'Childhood's End' was broadcast live on WRPI radio 17Jul03, which MoLM has marked as the re-release date of this remastered roio.

Pink Floyd - Grosser Saal Musikhalle, Hamburg, West Germany February 25, 1971 - (The M-502) - shn.

One of my Top 10 and a True Must-Have!note: the original artwork is contained in the download but it could be described by some as pornographic. I have chosen not to publicly post it.

This is the holy grail of Pink Floyd recordings of indeterminate origin. I've been collection RoIOs since high school (when vinyl was king) and even then this was the one to get. M-502 is the matrix number of the original 2-LP vinyl set that was made in Europe sometime in the (late?) 70's. Although there are many different versions of this show, all of them are sourced from a M-502 vinyl copy.

Some sound better than others, none of them sound anything like this. This 2-CDR set comes from a mint condition original LP, and has been beautifully remastered by the Digital Floyd Archives. Not only is this one of the best sounding recordings (especially of this era), this is one of the best vinyl remastering jobs I have ever heard.

The performance:

Wow. This seems to be the only concert with the brass/choir on Atom Heart Mother where the brass section didn't make any mistakes! Also, the 18+ minute version of A Saucerful of Secrets is probably the definitive version of this song. Did I mention that this is my favorite version of Careful With That Axe, Eugene? Roger's doesn't scream, he roars. Hold on to your hat.

Ripped from the original silver CD pressing. The SuperSonic bootleg label put out a gem of a product with this show. Not only is the sound quality out of this world, but the artwork is stunning as well.

The performance itself is truly remarkable. It was recorded only a few weeks into the tour for the debut album and shows a band giving their absolute all. Brad Delp sounds great! Sholtz and Goudreau trade leads frequently and the fireworks they create are spectacular. Bass player Sheehan and drummer Hashian, hold down the grooves well throughout and contribute serviceable background vocals as well.

Considering Sholtz played almost everything on the studio record himself and Delp did lead and background vocals, the parts are covered very well by the live band.

Though, the background vocals can't match 4 or 5 overdubbed Delps. Highlights include a very early version of "A Man I'll Never Be", (which would later appear on the Don't Look Back album) and a blistering version of "Foreplay/Long Time" as well as a few gems that never made it on their studio albums. All in all a show that no Boston fan should be without! Grab this boot while you can!

No Other - Gene Clark - 1974

Ex-Byrd Gene Clark's early-'70s solo efforts, which rank alongside the recordings of the Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in terms of quality, vision, and appeal, have been unjustly overlooked. This is particularly true of NO OTHER, Clark's 1974 coup de grace. While the focus of NO OTHER's excellent predecessors WHITE LIGHT and ROADMASTER was on stripped down, passionate country-rock, NO OTHER pushes Clark's aesthetic to another level entirely. A cadre of female backing vocalists lend gospel-drenched color to the album, taking Clark's excellent compositions to church, and giving the whole a sanctified feel.

Amid the strummed acoustics and weeping pedal steel of songs like "Life's Greatest Fool" and "The True One," there is also the expansive, orchestral feel of "Strength of Strings" which sounds like the Moody Blues by way of the Delta, and the exceptional title track, which encompasses sinuous blues, a light, synthesizer-touched groove, and gospel dreaminess. An unbeatable team of session musicians gives the record a solid backbone, while producer Thomas Jefferson Kaye adds a high gloss that puts NO OTHER with best of radio-ready '70s rock. Still, it is ultimately Clark's unique, superior songwriting and reflective lyrics that make NO OTHER a treasure worth seeking out.

Listen as the grandiose drama of 'From A Silver Phial' unfolds and marvel at the epic Spectoresque wall of sound. Choirs and orchestras provide a rich backdrop of cocaine fuelled excess. The hugely influential title track 'No Other' dares to incorporate funk, soul and gospel. This is what Primal Scream were listening to when they recorded Screamadelica. Happy Together LP - The Turtles - 1967

Originally released on White Whale (7114). Includes liner notes by Harold Bronson. This is simply one of the most classic sixties albums ever evoking the trippy spirit of the times splendidly! I grew up with this album and it's Rhino vinyl reissue in the 80's. Every song on this long player is memorable and hearing them again -- minus the scratches from my worn-out vinyl copy -- is like hearing from a long-lost friend.

Fun tunes like "Makin' My Mind Up" and the novelty "The Walking Song" plus movie theme "Guide For the Married Man" are great songs which round out the entire album. The classic "I Think I'll Run Away" is my favorite. "Me About You" will stick in your mind for days and leave you with a smile. The classic Turtles songs "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be With Me" are the end pieces which make this THE Turtles album to have in any collection!

This album must be heard in its entirety by any new or old-timer Turtles fan. One other note: Bill Inglot, who mastered many of Rhino's better releases worked on this re-release. For that one reason alone, you can be assured that the sonics of this CD will be impeccable!

THE CLASH - Street Rats (Ultra Rare Trax) 2008

This 2002 European release featuring some rarities, outtakes, demos, and various live tracks from the greatest band in the world, The Clash. The collection of ultra rare tracks, some previously officially released can all be found scrambled into other albums, but collected here for the first time are some rare Clash tunes, like their cover of "Louie, Louie" and the classic ska tune "Pressure Drop". Joe Strummer and Mick Jones collaborated an all of these demos and one can get a bit nostalgic listening to the mix. Enjoy, the sounds of these rough riders - The Clash!
