Flo & Eddie are both impressive singers and very funny comedians, and both aspects of their talent are on display here, from the pop sheen of "Rebecca" to the sidesplitting return of The Sanzini Brothers. Formerly of The Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman jumped ship in mid 1970 only to end up with Frank Zappa and The Mothers circa 1971. Howard and Mark (Flo and Eddie) left Zappa and released a self titled album (Flo and Eddie) and made a huge name for themselves as session backup singers for a veritable who's who of rock royalty.
This, their second album was released in 1973, went out of print in vinyl, then re- released on cd for a very short time only to go out of print yet again. Unless you followed these guys from their youth in the Turtles or you were a Mothers/Zappa fan, or spent your 80's New Years' at The Bottom Line in NYC, chances are you've never heard of them.
These guys are killer players and fantastic singers (evoking some harmonies complex enough to rival the Beach Boys) and all this results in their being gifted musical mimics. And you probably don't have to be a contemporary or a musical historian to get the ... jokes.
The record has two studio cuts at the beginning and the end--some are better than others (the title cut is great fun). But the real reason to buy this disc is for the live set that is sandwiched in between. Though there is some of it I can do without (The Tibetan Memory Trick)--but for the occasional meandering silliness, the rest of it is a true riot. It can veer into the X-rated and the four-letter words, but considering all we have in our face these days, this is tame.
If you are a collector who hunts for the unusual, this is a must for you.
