Mickboy is famous for his reworking of the Rolling Stones catalog, though he's done a great job working over George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, and he's done at least one Led Zeppelin - this one.
Few people know who Mickboy is, and not very many know exactly what it is he does. Obviously he doesn't have access to the master tapes, so it's not really a 'remaster', it's certain that he does a 'needle drop'. He buys the best quality vinyl available - that's a plus right there - takes it into a studio and EQ's the hell out of it probably, and who knows what all else he does. It's not just EQ'ing that's for sure.
Unlike Dr. Ebbet's needle drops of the old Beatles LP's, Mickboy's goal isn't to faithfully reproduce what's on the viny, he enhances the sound in many subtle ways. Whether this is a good thing or not, whether his 'remaster' is better-sounding or just different-sounding, that's for you to judge. To my ears this job he did on Led Zep 4 is stupendous. Man it just sounds awesome. The whole thing sounds fuller, warmer, and more clear and vibrant than the original. Included are two bonus tracks - Hey Hey What Can I Do and an acoustic version of Black Dog - both worked over by the Mickboy!
