Yeah Baby! Now this is the way I remember the Beatles having grown up in the 70's and listening to them on this and other compilation albums. This is easly one of my FAVES! The soundtrack to the summer of 1976. I picked up the original foil covered, embossed Capitol Records double LP set at Kelley's Stereo Mart in Edmonton way back when and I still have it to this day!The song order and remixes are just fantastic! The sound quality is unbelieveable.
This CD issue is a fantastic addition to the Dr. Ebbett collection. Although there are some conflicting reports as to exactly how much George Martin re-tweaked these recordings for inclusion in the 1976 "Rock & Roll Music" double album (later split into a separate Volume 1 and Volume 2), the mixes presented here are really enjoyable. To my ears, the most dramatic differences can be heard in the earlier (pre-'65)recordings. This is one of the only handful of places to find some great quality, relatively sane-sounding stereo mixes of early songs like Twist and Shout, I Saw Her Standing There, and You Can't Do That. That is to say, here you can find stereo mixes where the vocals and the instruments are actually centered instead of being panned separately into odd places in the stereo picture like they are on the conventional 'stereo' versions available on the regular albums. As well, these mixes seem to have the bass, midrange and trebble boosted a bit...and while not neccessarily faithful to the 'original' mix, it makes them sound more contemporary on a modern system. Low harmony vocals on "I`m Down" are more noticable, "Back in the USSR" screeches at you with lots more aeroplane noises. Indeed this collection is one of the best sounding to my hears and comes blasting out of a good surround system! Full artwork included.
